Pret Dundee, Brook Street

We are passionate reducing food waste in our local community. This is achieved by running both a community food larder and a zero waste cafe which both run from Dundee: Northeast @ Fintry building. Larder members can choose from a mix of 12 fresh, frozen and ambient items for a weekly fee of £2. In addition, larder members can also access surplus supermarket/bakers goods and sanitary projects for no additional cost.The zero waste offers food/hot drinks that would have been destined for landfill.

Saving waste is our aim. We are a charity trying to save food waste from going to landfill by picking up surplus & diverting back into the local community. We have a location at 5 High Street, Monifieth. DD5 4DA which houses fridges, freezer, shelves etc for safe food storage. We have a group of volunteers to man the fridge and also to collect the food from supermarkets etc. All volunteers are trained as per Environmental Health guidelines. There is a donation box but we do not charge for any food items. We have a Facebook page and we have had the local newspaper down on opening after relocating from smaller premises. We have received funds from Angus Council, Hubbub, Monifieth South Angus Church, Rotary Club of Monifieth & District, Seagreen, Northwood Charitable Trust, Tesco and Sainsbury’s. Alongside our fridge, within our premises we also run a small successful charity shop.

A community fridge based in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, we aim to be a base for local people to collect and use unwanted food donated by businesses and community supporters. We see the opening of the Ferry Fridge as a positive move to cut food waste and reduce its impact on the environment. We also hope to help people who are struggling with food poverty. In March 2025 we took over the lease of a former cabmen’s shelter in Gray Street, which is now being fitted out for us by another local charity, the Men’s Shed. We have been delighted by the level of community support, with a local business, Hosies, donating fridges, and more than 40 people responding to an initial request for volunteers. The Ferry Fridge will be open to everyone, at no charge. It will be run by volunteers, and we will soon be in a position to announce our opening days and times. We are working to build a sense of community around the Fridge. It is sited in a community garden with some seating available. The garden is along the edge of the main car park in Broughty Ferry and the train station is adjacent, so the Fridge will be convenient for locals, visitors and passers-by. The Ferry Fridge is part of the Dundee Community Food Network and is benefiting from the sharing of help and advice with similar groups across the city. Our project has been covered in The Courier newspaper and, as we near our opening date, we will provide regular updates on our Facebook page.
