The Food Rescue Group, Buckhurst Hill is a practical, community-driven initiative addressing food waste as a critical climate issue while promoting sustainable living at a local level. The group is made up of committed volunteers from local schools, community organisations, and neighbourhood networks, all united by a shared commitment to environmental sustainability, resource conservation, and social responsibility. The urgency of this work is clear. Globally, around one third of all food produced is wasted, and when edible food is sent to landfill it releases methane, a greenhouse gas more than 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Reducing food waste is therefore not only a social responsibility but a climate necessity. Rescuing surplus food cuts emissions while providing vital support to households facing barriers to accessing fresh, healthy meals. The group works closely with local producers, independent retailers, and supermarkets to intercept surplus food before it becomes waste. These partnerships deliver measurable environmental benefits by reducing landfill use and disposal costs, while ensuring nutritious food is redirected back into the community. The operational model prioritises speed and efficiency, with food collected and redistributed within 15 minutes of pickup. This rapid turnaround maintains food quality, removes the need for storage, and helps reduce emissions associated with refrigeration and extended supply chains. Food safety sits at the centre of all operations. Volunteers are trained to inspect food immediately upon collection to ensure it meets strict safety standards. Any unsuitable items are disposed of responsibly to prevent further environmental harm. Coordination is managed through a dedicated WhatsApp group, providing real-time updates on collection times, locations, and quantities, and enabling a responsive and efficient approach. The impact in Buckhurst Hill is both environmental and social. Every kilogram of food rescued avoids emissions that would otherwise result from landfill decomposition, while the food itself supports households and community groups across the town. At the same time, the initiative strengthens local networks, fosters shared responsibility, and builds resilience in the face of climate and economic challenges. By diverting significant quantities of food from landfill, the Food Rescue Group, Buckhurst Hill is reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving valuable resources, and bringing people together around a shared goal: creating a more sustainable future for their community. Change happens one meal, one volunteer, and one community at a time, and in Buckhurst Hill, this work is helping turn climate action into everyday practice.
