The Literacy Pirates
London, UK
The Literacy Pirates exists to improve the literacy, confidence and perseverance of children who are falling behind at school and have fewer opportunities, so they can achieve at school and beyond. The ‘Young Pirates’, aged 9-12, are referred to us by their schools to attend a year-long learning programme at one of our three fantastical centres, or ‘Ships’, in Hackney, Haringey and our recently launched ‘virtual’ ship. Children attend weekly after-school sessions where they receive extra adult attention from trained volunteers, who support them with their reading and writing projects. We want every child to feel that their work is special enough to share with the world. Each term’s work culminates in a professionally publication, such a book, film or podcast. This gives them a sense of pride and purpose in their writing, while also nurturing their creativity and helping them find their voices.
