Norton Fitzwarren Church School FOOD HUB Community Wellbeing Champions

Taunton, UK

The Wellbeing Champions, who are pupils ranging in age from 7 to 11, have started a community outreach project called 'Norton Food Hub'. So far the pupils have organised an emergency food bank in school (shed at main entrance), have linked up with Skittles Coffee Shop to provide families struggling to buy food free meals in the school holidays and are now hoping to create a community food/ produce shed and toy/ book library to be positioned by the Village Hall. Their idea will mean people can donate, swap or take items from the 'Food Hub'. Families in our community often do not want to use the main food bank in Taunton as it requires registration, speaking to strangers, losing 'face' and causes embarrassment and anxiety. We have noticed that families are more open at admitting problems to school staff and to the team at Skittles as they are trusted, familiar allies. The Wellbeing Champion have fundraised for the shed but we need consistent grants and donations to keep the Hi stocked. This project is well established. The church is involved and we receive donations from them, school non-uniform, days and Harvest Festival generate some of the donations to the Hub. We now need a continuing reserve of money to keep the project running. . We would like to involved the local allotments and local farmers with this project. The ideas continue to flow and so far the project has been received with positive community interest. In the future we would like to have a fridge in the Hib as presently we can only supply non perishable items. The Hub is well used and we often make food packages for families in need. It has become an established part of the school and wider community.
