Biddulph Churches Together Foodbank
Stoke-on-Trent, UK
we provide extra fresh foods alongside the tins & packets that are provided by the main Foodbank warehouse. We think it is important to try to add more nutritional balance to the food parcels that our guests receive. We have 2 Foodbanks in our area under the umbrella of Biddulph Churches Together Foodbank. One is at English Martyrs Church & the other at St.Johns church. Our visitors are referred to us by agencies who support families in the community eg.CAB, social services etc.Our service is free of charge. The surplus food helps us to provide fresh food items alongside the tins & packed goods that the Foodbank warehouse provides. The grants that we receive help to top up fresh food items with butter, cheese, eggs & other fresh fruits & veg ,we need to make sure we have enough to give to every one attending. We also provide small electrical energy saving appliances and electric blankets, hot water bottles, hats , scarves & gloves etc in the cold weather. Alongside the food items we also give out toiletries and cleaning products & pet foods.

Green Tree House Food Club

The green tree house (tgth) is a not-for-profit charitable organisation created May 2014, run solely by eight local volunteers and five trustees, bringing all different life skills to the charity from social care, nursery nurse, to an ex-veteran.
Tgth uses a holistic approach to people’s well-being with a dual focus improving peoples physical and mental health. We support people who are struggling socially, emotionally, and financially, through community activities.
Tgth social supermarket supports people with access to healthy food that they can afford each week, we are addressing some of the basics of what people need food, shelter, attention, and interaction, encouraging them to be in a better position to help themselves,
Tgth aims are: To act as a resource for children, young people and their families and carers who need such a resource by reason of their youth, disability, financial hardship or social circumstance within Biddulph Town and surrounding areas. With the object of improving their condition of life.
• To provide advice and assistance and organise programmes of recreational, social, leisure, physical, educational, and other activities as a means to:
• Advancing in life and helping children develop their skills, capacities, and capabilities.
• Advancing education
• Providing recreational, physical, leisure activities in the interest of social welfare.
Addressing the basics of what people need (food, shelter, attention, interaction etc) enables them to help themselves, our aim with the social supermarket is to provide a long-term support, not a short-term ‘sticking plaster’ solutions like food banks. Helping people with the motivation, accountability, and skills to change their situation and address their issues, empowering them to make life changes so that they will not perpetually need third-party support. For example, cooking classes, nutritional information, how to eat well on a budget.
People experiencing food insecurity are at a higher risk of both physical and mental health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, depression, and anxiety. Poverty can have negative, lasting effects on health and well-being which is likely to effect children as they grow into adulthood.
Our food larder allows people the dignity to choose food items they prefer in a space where a variety of healthy options are available. The goal is to create long-term food security for the future. We open Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 2pm.
