Argos Launceston

The Launceston Memory Café, the first in Cornwall to open in October 2007, provides people in Launceston with a regular service for those in the community who would welcome the opportunity for a break in their everyday lives and a chance to go out and enjoy themselves. There's a relaxed and informal atmosphere which allows those having difficulties to share opportunities with others to reminisce and enjoy the afternoon, by way of pastimes - music, songs, pictures, word games, creative arts and so on. Carers can relax too, knowing they are in a place of understanding and care, able to exchange experiences with other carers and our volunteers, and to obtain further professional advice if needed (on a strictly confidential basis). New members and volunteers are all welcome. We run on alternate Saturdays from 2pm - 4pm

As part of the nationwide Trussell Trust Foodbank Scheme, we have been providing food for local people in need since 2011. We are open Monday to Thursday 10am to 1pm providing 3-day emergency food parcels to people who have been referred to us. We run Launceston Foodbank charity shop to help fund our foodbank to make us self-funding and sustainable. We have donation points in shops around the town to collect food. At Windmill Hill Academy, we would like to further develop our school garden to make it wonderful space for our pupils, staff, families and local community. We have limited outside space in comparison to the number of pupils that attend the school (approximately 200 pupils). This is due to the school being positioned in the middle of the town on a hill. Therefore, we would like to utilise this space. Since Covid-19, we have, now more than ever, realised the importance of our school garden – not only as another learning space, but to support the children’s learning and wellbeing. For years, the garden has been left so it has become overgrown and needs a lot of work to redevelop it. Unfortunately, without sufficient funding and materials it is impossible to fully develop the school garden as we would have hoped. We hope to get the community involved in the project, for example parents, grandparents and the wider community. By doing so, we hope to make it a space that the community are proud of and respect. We have an Eco group within the school and they are keen to ensure that it is an environment that is eco friendly using natural products and which promotes animals and insects using it as their habitat. We don’t want this project to be a one off but one that is redeveloped, established and is maintained for future generations. We have worked a team – pupils and staff – to come up with a plan to redevelop it and utilise the space. This would include: A potting shed for the children to grow plants Gardening tools, wheelbarrow and gloves Raised bed planters Clearance of overgrown plants and brambles Purchase of new plants (e.g. herbs to create sensory areas) Turfing to make more green areas and space for the children to enjoy Benches and Picnic tables for the children (and staff ) to sit and enjoy the environment
