Our Day Centre is the heart of the homeless community in Southampton. We provide a safe space for up to 70 adults each day, who are homeless, to access basic facilities such as food, clothes, showers, and laundry. The service also has a dedicated health care service on-site and we’re also able to provide accommodation for up to 10 clients. Our aim is to support our clients to remain safe and maintain their mental and physical health; to ensure their immediate needs are met and to help clients find the right path for them to access support and long-term accommodation. We set up our food banks 28 yrs ago and our Marketplaces 4 years ago. We have 5 food, 1 clothing bank and 4 Marketplaces. The Banks provide emergency support to those in need. Our Marketplaces is a community food membership scheme for local people. Our Banks operate an online system referral agents can use to refer clients. There is a network of over 2000 individual agents able to refer to us now. In 2023we gave out 4 days of food 21,765 times and clothed 2,153 people with x4 outfits. We do all this free of charge through working co-operatively with supermarkets, charities, business and churches across the city to make it happen. SCM Marketplaces have been designed to complement our existing emergency food and clothes project. For a weekly £5 membership subscription, Marketplace members can come on the day their Marketplace is open, use the members café, chat to members and volunteers, talk to any visiting advice agencies, and choose around 13 items from the fridges, freezers, fresh fruit and veg, bakery, ambient food products and toiletries.

The Alcohol Accommodation Service is one of Society of St James' local authority funded projects that supports adults with a history of homelessness. Our specialist alcohol supported accommodation supports 24 adults who are trying to overcome their problematic alcohol use so that they can have a better, healthier future. All the support is tailored around individual need and people are encouraged to progress at a pace that is comfortable for them. As with all of our services, meaningful activity is key to helping people have a different focus in their life, and we encourage our clients to access the wide range of opportunities that we offer to help them find something new to motivate them. People who have become physically dependent on alcohol need to reduce their intake gradually because suddenly stopping when your body is physically dependent is highly dangerous and can be life-threatening. To keep people safe and help them reduce their alcohol use without placing them at risk of harm, we work in close partnership with healthcare colleagues to make sure that any reduction plan is safe.
