Surplus To Purpose (SToP) is an environmental enterprise which specialise in the interception of surplus food destined for waste. This produce may be past Best Before, suffered accidental damage or surplus to requirements. Trained personnel record, process and quality control all intercepted food, to ensure it is safe for consumption. This food is then redistributed through various activities such as; boxes for families, outside catering & events, Pay As You Feel cafes and into schools. SToP intercepts approximately 1,000 tons per year at its headquarters in Leeds - the equivalent of 2.3 million meals per year. A majority of the produce we intercept is perishable items such as fruit & vegetables, and bakery goods. However, we also intercept frozen meat & fish, chilled dairy items and non perishable items such as dry goods, drinks and confectionary. In 2022 SToP aims to become the U.K.s largest caterer of events using intercepted produce. From weddings, to conferences, birthdays and work lunches, we wish to provide environmental alternatives to mainstream providers of contract catering. Our mission is to Feed Bellies Not Bins, whilst educating people on the inhumane amounts of edible food wasted every year in the U.K. All of our spaces are inclusive, and all the food we intercept is available to all. Rainbow Junktion is open as a community cafe and signposting service Mondays and Thursdays 11.30-3pm and as Foodshare (shopping) on Fridays 11.30-4pm. Our lunches, snacks and groceries are always on a pay-as-you-feel basis. Our volunteers take food that would otherwise be wasted from supermarkets and prepare delicious and nutritious lunch with all dietary options covered. We aim to fight food poverty using food waste whilst also building community.

St George’s Crypt works with homeless and vulnerable adults providing immediate care and support, food and accommodation. We run engagement activities and skills training, working towards positive change and employability. Our Care Centre at the Crypt has 15 single bedrooms for temporary residents and 12 beds dormitory style in The Hub for one night at a time emergency accommodation. HALP is a partnership project with the NHS, to give accommodation to homeless people discharged from hospital who still require a lower level of care. As well as our main Care Centre, we run two specialist residential projects with a further 28 rooms for men, dealing with alcohol dependency, addiction and recovery. Our day service provides a 3 course hot meal to an average of 70 people each weekday. The food is prepared by our Nurture project. The people who volunteer in this project are previous service users, prisoners on temporary licence, vulnerable adults who find it difficult to gain employment. We have an in house diploma course, teaching basic skills in catering and industry related accredited training. We run two cafés open to the general public. Real work experience building up a positive work ethic has led to paid employment for many of the volunteers.
