REHOBOTH COMMUNITY OUTREACH CLUB located 1-18 Allwood Close, Sydenham SE26 4JP is a charity and it has been entered onto the Register of Charities with the Registered Charity Number 1168822. Rehoboth Community Outreach club started reaching out to vulnerable families in 2013, offering befriending, parenting & life skills training. Over time the services evolved expanding to offer mentoring to young people, employment skills training and a food bank. In March 2014 Rehoboth started receiving requests for support with addressing the increasing issue of food poverty amongst the single homeless living in hostels and the local street homeless, this saw the launch of the Community Lunch Club. Initially the lunch club was feeding 20 people every Monday with a 2 course hot meal. But this number quickly grew to 150 people a week when Rehoboth partnered with Miriam Lodge providing meals to their most vulnerable homeless residents. The partnership has expanded and Rehoboth community outreach club “The Lunch Club” now deliver 200 meals every Monday across 2 hostels. In addition, we have some homeless people living locally in the community who walk-in and collect their meals. The feeding programme also provides a soup social, with home cooked vegetable and chicken soup with rolls to the residents in the hostels on a Friday. The generosity of our local donors business and others in neighbouring community, with financial donations from the church membership and individuals, make it possible to provide our services free to vulnerable individuals and families. The community outreach service is facilitated by a team of 25 volunteers who cook, serve food, clean, deliver the meals, and provide the befriending, mentoring and training activities. Rehoboth hopes to double its feeding programme to 300 meals a week by the end of 2018; to support at least 50 homeless people to capacity build their employment and life skills, enhancing their potential of accessing employment, education and training opportunities. The Rehoboth Community Outreach Club aims are to contribute to breaking the generational cycle of poverty and deprivation within families, inspire hope & healing in the heart and soul of vulnerable individuals and communities and encourage peace, unity and respect across generations. This project supports the fantastic work that Palmer House does for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. I have been collecting food for this purpose for some ten years! Based in Croydon, Palmer House supports 60 single people up to 65 years of age with complex needs including experience of homelessness or rough sleeping, substance misuse and mental ill health. Customers are referred to Palmer House by the London Borough of Croydon and stay up to two years. The charity empowers them to make decisions about their support, including choosing their Support Worker. This person centred approach enables customers to identify their existing strengths and skills so they can achieve their goals and aspirations. The team at Palmer House believes customers can move beyond their current support needs and achieve their full potential by developing new skills and accessing opportunities. Whilst at Palmer House, customers engage in developing life and independent living skills including developing routine and structure, fostering positive relationships, healthy eating and cooking.

The people that we work with (known to us as customers) are the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people in our society – homeless young people and adults including ex-offenders, teenage parents, people with entrenched mental health problems and alcohol or substance misuse issues. In Croydon alone, we house and support 330 homeless men and women. Our innovative and person-centred approach with our customers delivers remarkable outcomes. Between 2015 – 2016, 75% of our customers went from homelessness to living independently. Of those who tried to reconnect with estranged family and friends, 95% of customers established contact with loved ones, whilst 74% of customers with substance misuse issues were supported to manage these issues better. The lack of the right support can often be the only obstacle for our customers to live a full and independent life. At Evolve we believe every one of our customers is unique and that everyone’s road to independent living can be different. Because of this, we believe in working closely with the customer in creating a support system that will empower and equip them at the right pace. The issues faced with the provision of healthy eating and affordability for those who have experienced homelessness and on a low income are well documented and evidenced across the world. The failure to adequately address this in developed countries reflects a weakness in our society to harness the abilities of our communities to come up with a solution that delivers real and sustainable change. Programs that are designed to maximise personal wellbeing, employment opportunities and community engagement should be seen as the next generational approach to educating those who are on a low income. Customers at our Croydon services have identified through customer meetings and existing work groups of the desire to set up a program where they can learn skills that will help them on their journey towards independent living. Healthy food preparation is key to a health lifestyle and the food donations sourced through Neighbourly will make a huge difference in engaging our customers and help them make better healthy food choice, especially as they prepare for their lives aware from Evolve.
