Alton Community Cupboard is a community project set up to reduce waste. Local volunteers collect surplus food (and other surplus goods) from supermarkets, allotments and peoples' fridges and make it available to anyone and everyone from the local area. Alton Community Cupboard does not charge for the food and surplus goods that we distribute but small voluntary donations of £2 are accepted for higher value items to contribute to running costs. Alton Community Cupboard makes the food and surplus goods available to anyone in the community that can benefit from these. The shop opens 6 days per week and there are a core of customers who attend every week or more frequently as well as others who attend from time to time. We are a not-for-profit group supported by East Hampshire Community Rail Partnership. Our mission is to save food from going to waste and offer it to the local community. We have a team of volunteers who, six days a week, collect food from the local supermarkets. We also have volunteers who work in the shop and run the sessions when we open to the public. On average we have over 200 customers pass through the shop. In addition, we occasionally receive produce from other outlets and from individuals who have a surplus in their allotments or gardens. From time to time people give us long-life food when they move house or clear out their kitchen cupboards. We do not ask for any money for the produce but donations from customers help us to cover our running costs.

The Hale Community Centre is a community resource that provides a range of services, Including a Community Fridge & Cupboard. We aim to re-distribute unwanted edible food from local businesses and individual households, which can then be taken by anyone who wants to get involved with the project. This prevents the food going to waste and into landfill. We would like to become a part of the community and bring people together, whilst looking after our environment.
