Surplus To Purpose (SToP) is an environmental enterprise which specialise in the interception of surplus food destined for waste. This produce may be past Best Before, suffered accidental damage or surplus to requirements. Trained personnel record, process and quality control all intercepted food, to ensure it is safe for consumption. This food is then redistributed through various activities such as; boxes for families, outside catering & events, Pay As You Feel cafes and into schools. SToP intercepts approximately 1,000 tons per year at its headquarters in Leeds - the equivalent of 2.3 million meals per year. A majority of the produce we intercept is perishable items such as fruit & vegetables, and bakery goods. However, we also intercept frozen meat & fish, chilled dairy items and non perishable items such as dry goods, drinks and confectionary. In 2022 SToP aims to become the U.K.s largest caterer of events using intercepted produce. From weddings, to conferences, birthdays and work lunches, we wish to provide environmental alternatives to mainstream providers of contract catering. Our mission is to Feed Bellies Not Bins, whilst educating people on the inhumane amounts of edible food wasted every year in the U.K. All of our spaces are inclusive, and all the food we intercept is available to all. Every day, people go hungry in the UK for all kinds of reasons, from changes and delays in the benefits system to redundancy to receiving an unexpectedly large bill for a major repair. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems. Normanton Foodbank relies on the support of local people, businesses and communities to help alleviate poverty and hunger in our community. Food donations Non-perishable in-date food is donated by the public at places across the local community, such as schools,churches and businesses, as well as supermarket collection points. It is then sorted and packed into boxes by volunteers, ready to be given to people in need. Food vouchers Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, schools and social workers identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. They can exchange this voucher for a foodbank parcel of three days’ nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food. The help we give… Our foodbanks offers a lot more than food. Our volunteers offer a listening ear to clients over a warm drink, and signpost people to other charities and agencies who can help resolve the underlying cause of the crisis. There are many ways to help The Trussell Trust as a volunteer from helping at collection points, to stock-taking and audits, to helping us refurbish our premises. We can continue supporting people in crisis thanks to passionate people giving their time to help their hungry neighbours. The role of AOC within the community includes -General charitable purposes - The prevention or relief of poverty - Overseas aid/famine relief - Religious activities - Economic/community development/employment - Children/young people - Elderly/old people - People with disabilities - The general public/mankind - Makes grants to individuals - Makes grants to organisations - Provides human resources - Provides services - Provides advocacy/advice/information At AOC The Ark Family Centre we offer a range of support services to the local community. Some of these are just starting out and are in development. We have a vision to touch the lives of the community to provide a safe place for children families and individuals to seek support and advice or be signposted to relevant local organisations. The vision is to improve quality of life, provide equal access to basic provision and enable individuals to grow. We have set up a food bank which operates on an open door policy so everyone is welcome and can choose what they need rather than being provided with a standard package. The aim is that people can feel valued and have equal access to basic food provision. The food supply from neighbourly will be used to meet the increasing demand and need for food. The food provided to the community is free of charge and goes to young children, teenagers and families as well as individuals who may be struggling. We have an open door policy so this is accessible to all members of the public including some families who we work with regularly. In addition to this AOC also offer a warm space called switch off and park at the ark on a weekly basis. This provides a safe space for the community to access a computer, work, talk and there are specific trained mental health practitioners available . General help and support is offered including signposting to other agencies. As part of this group we provide hot drinks and hot food to all that attend. There is no restriction and again this is an open door policy. The food from neighbourly would therefore be used for this also. Additionally we offer childrens groups and groups for parenting support and emotional wellbeing for children and parents. The aim in the near future is to expand our services to offer a group to enable families to ddvelop their skills in cooking on a budget. This will enable families to grow and share their skills through generations!
