Great Marsden is a primary school in Nelson, Lancashire. Our school is in an area of high deprivation and we have a higher than average number of children on free school meals. Through the pandemic we supported families with basic food parcels. This has had to continue and we now have our own foodbank. We seek to educate our children to be responsible citizens of the future and support their families, and the wider community, to thrive and flourish. Great Marsden is a one form entry primary school in Nelson, in the east of Lancashire. Our school serves an area of high deprivation and we have higher than the national average of children on free school meals. During the pandemic, we were faced with families in extreme difficulty. Through a personal donation and our MAT we supported them in providing food parcels. Once the pandemic ended, sadly the levels of food poverty did not decrease, in fact we have seen a growth in those seeking help. We started signposting to the local food back but some of our families found this very difficult. We knew them, had a trusting relationship with them, coming to us was like coming to family. There is no charge for the service we provide. Hence we started our own foodbank, initially from the donations of staff and our families. For the past 12-18 months our Friends of St John's (school fundraising - which is ironic really!) have been buying fresh produce for the food bank each week to go alongside tins and packets. We call it 'Take What You Need and Give When You Can' and our families do genuinely try to do this. However, the ability to give back is becoming less and less. 12 months ago I applied for a grant to provide us with a sturdy outdoor shed and shelving, as our school entrance area was beginning to look like a shop. We had also noticed that some mums, and particularly dads, would only come in to collect something if no one was around. We knew we had to make it a safe, anonymous space. Share the Care is now a fully registered charity, registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. We are a small group of dedicated friends and volunteers, set up to help underprivileged, mentally challenged, physically and mentally impaired in the community. This has now greatly expanded, as more and more referrals were made, and many cases of needy families and individuals need help. Desperately needed support, donated food, clothing and basic essentials are distributed to the very vulnerable. We help many mentally challenged, autistic, mentally and physically disabled, cancer sufferers and survivors, COVID-19 survivors, children and families at risk. Service users are identified: a) by the volunteers out and about making deliveries, b) by referrals from other charities/agencies/contacts c) by potential service users requesting that they also participate in the service. The support given to recipients is in the form of food/clothing/essential items, and comes in the form of frequent and regular 'drops'. With each delivery, the volunteers will assess if the items are being effectively used and whether support is still required or not. The 'size' of the delivery will depend on what items are available on that day (fresh produce is often involved), and the size of the family concerned. Are there any other services provided by your organisation other than food support? Share the Care will also provide clothing/books/essential supplies from time-to-time, where these items are available. Is there a charge for the service(s) provided by your organisation? No, there is no charge for receiving help from Share the Care, although we gladly accept donations from anyone who has the means to contribute. Colne Citadel is situated in a former Salvation Army building in Colne town centre. We are a charity run by a dedicated team of volunteers to serve all members of our local community without prejudice. By providing a safe, welcoming environment we aim to reduce social isolation and improve the wellbeing of our visitors. We are fortunate to have strong links with local recovery services and Elisha house- a residential recovery project in Colne. We also provide volunteering opportunities for individuals. Colne Citadel opens Mon and Fridays 10-2pm, wed 1-3 pm and sat morning 10-12 as an informal 'drop-in' centre for refreshments and company, We serve bacon butties Monday mornings, lunch Fridays 12-1 pm and cooked breakfasts sat 10-12. Tea and coffee is 50p, pasties and cakes courtesy of Gregg's bakery are free when available. Tesco kindly donate surplus bakery goods. We are also very grateful to Aldi supermarket in Colne for supporting us with surplus food. We hold a craft group for individuals with learning difficulties Mondays 10-2 pm (please book),women's group Wed 1-3pm , and a bingo club Thursday afternoon 1-3pm for elderly members of the community. Emerging futures hold a support group thurs 1-2.30 for families of those suffering from addiction. Hand-in-hand support group is held Friday afternoons 1-3pm and open to all. We have a free professional counselling service available for those over eighteen years and now have a team of eight dedicated volunteer counsellors. This year we were fortunate to receive funding from the National lottery (Awards for All) to continue and develop our counselling service. We also received funding from the Eric Wright foundation trust to commence mindfulness courses which we hope to start later this year. We try to buy products from a charity 'Inkind direct' to keep our costs down. We have recently made a new training room which we are hoping groups will make good use of for courses etc. We have purchased a projector for educational projects. Our building is in good condition but could do with redecoration in the kitchen and lounge areas and some new furniture which we hope to raise funds for in the near future. We have a nice garden area and shelter to the rear dedicated to a local teenager - The James Goodship memorial garden which was made by James' family and friends.
