South Machars Community Centre
Newton Stewart, UK
At the SMCC we have introduced a Community Fridge that can be used by anyone within Whithorn and the neighbouring villages. The facility operates from donations given as well as meals prepared and cooked for by volunteers from produce ( with short shelve life) gifted by local shops and supermarkets . All the preparation and cooking is carried out by those who hold Hygiene Certificates. An upright fridge and chest freezer are used and stringent checks for temperature and use by dates are made on a daily and sometimes twice daily depending on stock. We are now in our second year and last year we worked with another group and provided a Christmas Party with a full Christmas Dinner provided, catering for around 100 children. For provisions gifted that has a short shelve life a lot of healthy and hearty soups were made, Broth, Potato, Vegetable as well as bean, tomato and courgette casserole - all of these went down well and we know some people who were working took some of the frozen soup to their work to heat up, rather than having to pay for lunches.
