Somersham Primary School is a one and a half form entry primary school in the heart of Somersham, a small village on the outskirts of St Ives. We have a strong community ethos in our school and we pride ourselves in being a caring and warm place to develop and learn. We pride ourselves on teaching the children about the natural world and try to spend time in our nature areas as much as possible. By ensuring children of all ages and backgrounds have access to, and education in, the natural world, we can improve mental and physical wellbeing, and safeguard the environment for the future. By experiencing the natural world, children are far more likely to take better care of it. School wildlife gardens and nature areas can increase the biodiversity of school grounds, particularly in urban areas, and provide a safe and attractive place to learn about wildlife. They can be used for informal activities or to teach the curriculum and provide children with experience of the natural world through study and practical care of the garden. Somersham Primary has a large nature area which has a rather neglected pond, spotting shed and established trees, that is a calm, relaxing place for the children to birdwatch, spot insects, investigate trees and flowers and to do many more activities. The whole area needs a massive tidy; bird feeders need replacing, bushes and plants need cutting back and the pond needs a massive clean up and possibly a repair. We are very excited about what we can achieve in our nature area.
