The canals and rivers that the trust look after offer an authentic, unfenced, ‘no turnstiles’ opportunity to interact with history and nature first-hand. It’s a very big job looking after them. On top of maintaining the 2,000 miles of canals and rivers, which are often over 200 years old, they are responsible for an enormous network of bridges, embankments, towpaths, aqueducts, docks and reservoirs alongside everything else that makes up our wonderful waterways. By keeping our waterways alive they can ensure that visitors will always enjoy the boats, wildlife and sense of community that they create. From improving towpaths for cyclists and encouraging biodiversity by creating new wildlife habitats to maintaining our locks, bridges and aqueducts, they are constantly working to make our canals and rivers the very best they can be. With support from M&S as part of their Spark Something Good initiative – encouraging the nation to donate their time, not just their money – M&S staff and public volunteers are going to help rejuvenate Newton Heath, by joining us to remove graffiti, repair the towpaths, litter picking, grappling for fly tipped items on the bottom of the canal and titivating the bushes and shrubbery along the canal towpath. We want to create a green and enjoyable space for the local community, a corridor into the heart of Manchester, where people can discover nature right on their doorstep, please sign up for a volunteering slot and come and help us.
