Our school is at the heart of a diverse area of Batley in West Yorkshire. We would like to promote community cohesion and develop a strong community spirit by engaging families and neighbours of our school in free positive activities. Our vision is to develop a produce garden for all to enjoy. We are fortunate to have areas of land around the school building, but these are currently in need of attention. We would like to make raised beds and a school allotment, which would be tended to by our children, parents and neighbours. We would like to grow and harvest food crops including: herbs, lettuce, radishes, strawberries, turnips, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, sweet peas, broad beans and a whole range of flowers and plants that would attract and support insects, including butterflies and bees. A polytunnel would be an amazing addition to our vision. We envisage the waste land being transformed in to an oasis of horticultural delight, where the produce would be used in cooking lessons for parents and children to enjoy together. For this to happen, we need gardening tools, timber, storage facilities, plants and seeds, utensils to support cooking (outdoor cooking would be even better!). This long-term, sustainable project would make a huge difference to our community because it not only develops community cohesion and key life skills, but also teaches a sense of respect for the environment and appreciation of where produce comes from. Being environmentally friendly is an important aspect of our ethos at school, and especially important for our future generation to appreciate.
