Southcote GrowAllot Community Allotment

Reading, UK

Southcote GrowAllot started life in 2012 with local families coming together to transform a patch of derelict land into a space where they could grow and share organic crops for the benefit of the community. Five years on, the allotment is now a much-loved community resource, and with one in four local residents living in flats without access to a garden, Southcote GrowAllot is an opportunity for them to start growing their own vegetables, while keeping fit and having fun! The allotment has several growing spaces including raised beds, a poly-tunnel and an orchard. On-site facilities also include a tool shed, log cabin, gazebo with table and chairs, as well as several compost heaps and water butts. The allotment is run entirely by volunteers and managed by a committee which plans the crops, purchases seeds, compost and tools, and helps organise events. We run various workshops, learning sessions, corporate volunteer days, open days and stalls throughout the year, and have won awards at "Reading in Bloom" and "Thames and Chiltern in Bloom". Anyone can attend our weekly sessions which run on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Reading residents can also choose to become a member of Southcote GrowAllot Community Allotment for £8 a year, bringing additional benefits including planting a wider variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers, sharing in allotment harvest, and attending our AGM and workdays.
