Rossall Beach Residents & Community Group

Thornton-Cleveleys, UK

Rossall Beach Group are keen on improving our nominated area of beach and public realm for the benefit of people who use it through regular events and activities including monthly beach cleans. Engaging people to become involved in the community by providing fun projects and make friends. Educating adults and children about our environment and how we can all preserve it through our interactive Rossall Beach Buddies Roadshow, projects, campaigns and publicity. We regularly clean Rossall Beach every 4 weeks with volunteers from the local community. The number of volunteers taking part has slowly increased over the years and we now get an average of about 50 volunteers at each monthly beach clean. Unfortunately we regularly run out of equipment which prevents other volunteers from joining us. We are desperate to purchase more beach cleaning equipment which would encourage more volunteers to join in and help us so that we can continue with this very worthwhile and environmentally important community activity. With the help of our volunteers and friends we removed more than 2 tonnes of rubbish from the beach last year! A couple of years ago we introduced 'Beach clean and a brew!' so after an hour and a half beach cleaning we all go down to the local hostelry and have a well earned hot drink and a good old natter. This has proved to be very successful and it's a great opportunity for people to socialise, mix get to know their neighbours and make new friends. During our brew we are all very noisy but everyone has a good laugh and feels much better when they leave! Many of the beach cleaners have told their friends about what we get up to and they now come and join in as well, it's a wonderful feel good community benefit. Our beach cleaners tell us how much better they feel after an event and are convinced it has improved their health and outlook on life. Because of the feel good factor and the great opportunity to meet new friends we are now encouraging more people to join us especially after all the lockdowns and social distancing regulations. A lot of our volunteers tell us how much better they feel and it is much better than taking lots of medication.
