Lisanally Special School Litter Pick and Recycle Week The pupils took part in a whole school litter pick. Each class was assigned an area to target which was situated either within the school perimeter or nearby surrounds. Our aim was to improve the environment in which the school is situated and to identify ways to reuse some of the items we found. Junior and Senior pupils used litter grabbers, gloves and plastic bags to collect waste. Most of the paper, cans and plastics that we found were separated and taken by the pupils to the nearby recycling centre. A number of 2 litre plastic bottles were used for a project called, ‘The Garden Wall’. The bottles were sterilised and pupils were then able to prime and paint the bottles in lots of bright and vibrant colours. Then our classroom assistants used a sharp knife to cut holes in each bottle to make room for plants and for drainage. Pupils filled each bottle with soil and plants which were chosen by pupils themselves at a local garden centre. Special rope was purchased to display the bottles. We threaded three bottles on to the rope and hung them in rows in our sensory garden, junior playground and senior playground. We learn to care for the plants by watering them every week. This is our garden wall in the senior playground, we think it looks great! What do you think?
