West Lancashire Wildlife (Great Twin Pond Dig Clean Up)

Our project is based around an overgrown pond restoration on a public footpath, that has been fly-tipped many years ago. I'm Helen Greaves (https://www.geog.ucl.ac.uk/people/academic-staff/research-students/helen-greaves Twitter: @helenmgreaves) and this work is backed up by my PhD research on pond restoration. We have been monitoring a pond for the past 12 months and it is full of willow scrub and dries up because of these trees. In the past this pond has been fly-tipped with builders rubble because the pond has been left abandoned. We want to return this pond to its former glory and encourage people not to fly-tip waste in our countryside. How we plan to do this: 1. We have volunteers in out group and through Edge Hill University who would remove the scrub and the litter. 2. We require funding for a professional chainsaw user and also for a digger to remove a small amount of sediment from the pond which has built up over time. This will allow plants to colonise which will encourage wildlife. 3. We will continue to monitor the pond with local volunteers so that we can analyse the positive impact the work has had to wildlife. We hope that the outcomes of this activity will be: 1. Increase in public awareness of the importance of ponds and pond wildlife 2. Increased knowledge of the impact and issues of dumping litter into ponds 3. Increase in biodiversity at this site which will be monitored by volunteers.
