Havens Food Cooperative - Havens Connections Cafe - Havens Community Hub Rescuing and redistributing over 3 tonnes of perishable food per week and preventing landfill waste and the creation of more unwanted greenhouse gasses and supporting over 600 people. Operating two hotbin composting pods to create soil for gardeners who then give back surplus grown goods. Providing waste salad for local smallholding farmers who, in turn, donate goods to the community pantry. Newhaven Foyer provides supported housing for up to 37 16-25 year olds with critical housing needs. The project aims to teach residents how to cook simple cheap meals from many different cultures. Apart from giving them important life skills, the aim is to produce a recipe book based on the project and use it for fundraising purposes. The cooking workshops are arranged by evening staff based on ideas from the residents. The workshops generally last two hours and involve the teaching of various cooking techniques as well as the safe use of cooking implements and the rudiments of food hygiene and safety. The resulting meals are then served to the other residents. Once the first cycle of meals has been completed, residents will be invited to design and compile a recipe book and be taught how to use the appropriate software and camera techniques to deliver this. The resulting book will then be sold at various events to raise funds for other in-house activities.
