We are a waste food project sourcing good edible food that can no longer be sold. Many businesses in the town donate their surplus food to us. Food between its Best Before Date & Use-by dates is acceptable. We have a food hygiene rating of 4 out of 5. Our volunteers aspire to gaining Food Safety 2. The food is given out for free: if people wish to donate to help with our running costs they may. We also see people in the queue making friends & give out teas & coffees. We have created a recipe card for cheap nutritious meals, & display community information. The community police, town council, fire services hold an outreach presence.

More and more food waste is entering our landfill sites with much of it still being perfectly safe to eat. We are launching an exciting new project in Pickering, North Yorkshire. This is been taken on by members of our own community, to work in partnership with local retailers, with the aim towards reducing the amount of food waste from our town. This food is is made freely available for collection for anyone regardless of status or social standing and it is hoped that many residents from Pickering or surrounding areas will make use of the donated items. Food waste is a big issue in the UK. It is estimated that one third of food produced is wasted. Most of this is avoidable if better managed. Community fridges are being set up across the country as a way of redistributing this food that would otherwise go to landfill. Surplus food is provided by local businesses and is then available for collection from the free fridge by people who can use it.. A successful community fridge will cut food waste and build stronger bonds within the community. Norton Free Fridge has been operational with a formal constitution and management committee since December 2019. We are now located at The Salvation Army Church at 40 Wood Street, Norton, Malton, North Yorkshire. We are registered as a food business with the local authorities (rating is 5*) and are a not for profit organisation. We collect surplus food from local food stores and supermarkets on Tuesday and Friday mornings. They donate perishable foods that cannot be sold but are still suitable for consumption, We accept sealed packaged foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, pastry, and bread. We open on Tuesdays and Friday mornings each week. The doors open at 9.30 am when hot drinks are offered, and then the food is shared from 10.00 am.
