Foodsave Honiton is a is community food parcel service and community fridge covering Honiton and the surrounding areas in East Devon. We work to ensure no useable food is put to waste within our local community, ensuring that those around us receive high-quality, free food without the stigma of referrals, quotas or financial questionnaires. Since opening in November 2020, we have grown to support approximately 300 households across the town every week. We operate as a branch of Foodsave CIC, a not-for-profit food redistribution service operating community food parcel services, community larders and community fridges and freezers across the South West. Foodsave is one of the largest redistributors of surplus food outside of major cities in the South West, facilitating communities to create food waste reduction schemes tailored to their communities. Apple Tree Farm has been operating since mid-2018, providing educational and therapeutic opportunities for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, mental health challenges, and those experiencing social or economic disadvantage. In January 2020 the organisation was incorporated as a Community Interest Company, reflecting our commitment to operating as a community-focused organisation dedicated to supporting young people and families in North Devon. At the farm we provide opportunities for children and young people aged 6–18 to engage in practical, task-based activities that help them develop new skills, confidence and self-belief. Our approach is nurturing and person-centred, allowing young people to progress at their own pace within a safe and supportive environment where learning and personal development can flourish. By March 2020, at the start of the first COVID-19 lockdown, the farm was supporting around 40 young people each week through a variety of sessions and was receiving referrals from schools, the local authority, the NHS and other local organisations. During the summer of 2020 we welcomed nearly 30 children through funded sessions provided by Devon County Council’s Small Grant Scheme. During this time we became aware that some children were arriving hungry, often without having eaten breakfast. Through this work the farm has secured additional funding which enabled us to develop a fully operational kitchen with two cooking stations. This facility has become a central hub of activity at the farm, allowing children and young people to develop practical life skills through cooking and shared meals. These opportunities have enabled us to continue supporting young people who are often at risk of marginalisation, providing meaningful experiences that build confidence, independence and well-being. Through our work we have become increasingly aware of the social and economic challenges faced by families in our local community, and we remain committed to providing life-enhancing opportunities for the children, young people and families we support.

We are one of the many foodbanks supporting people in crisis. We accept food and financial donations in order to provide the service. Our Distribution Centres are staffed by many volunteers. We have six centres in the Northern Devon Foodbank; together covering a rural area of over 800 square miles. We service the whole of Torridge and North Devon Districts including the areas of Barnstaple, Bideford, Braunton, Hartland, Holsworthy, Ilfracombe, Lynton, South Molton, Torrington, and the surrounding villages. Quite a logistical feat! In 2020 we distributed over 125 tonnes of food supporting nearly 12,000 people (4,500 of those were children). That support extends to more than just food; we are dedicated to tackling the underlying causes of crisis not just applying a 'sticking plaster' to the problem. All of our services are aimed at moving people out of crisis and into a place of self-sufficiency. Our customers are normally referred to us by frontline agencies who commit to our principles of ending UK hunger by ensuring that people can care for themselves. Having over 400 referrers helps to ensure that people are getting the support they need in all walks of life. We are also proactive in educating people in food use and nutrition. Our ultimate aim is to see a society where foodbanks are no longer necessary and we will do everything in our power to achieve that.
