We redistribute surplus food from supermarkets to the local community and local charities. This not only saved food from landfill but also helps to build community. - What premises does your project operate from? Currently 38 Linkside Rd, L25 9NX. This is registered with EHO. We have just been offered one day a week in a local shop. We are also working with two local councillors (Mirna Juarez and Sharon Connor) to rent space in a local church hall in an evening too. - How do you identify service users and their needs? They approach us through our facebook page, word of mouth or other people/organisations direct them to ourselves. For example, Alice Bennett, an ex local councillor directed us to a lady with seven children. They also come to our Friday community event in Hunts Cross Gardens. - Are there any other services provided by your organisation other than food support? Our other aim is building community and providing opportunities for volunteering. - Is there a charge for the service(s) provided by your organisation? No - Do you currently collect surplus food from any other retailers? Yes – Tesco and a local Co op. - Has there been local press or similar that demonstrates your organisation's work in the local community? Not yet although the local councillors do share our facebook page. - Would it be possible to provide photographs of work that your organisation does in the local community? There are lots on our facebook page and Instagram page - Is your project a registered charity, registered CIC, social enterprise or non-profit organisation? We have made an application. - Have you partnered with other local good causes or council members who may be able to provide a reference? The Community Grocery supports those feeling the financial impact of COVID-19 and other circumstances to gain access to food and toiletry items. We know that many households in our local community have been feeling the financial impact of Covid-19 and so The Message Trust is partnering with Today's Community Church to bring the Community Grocery to Wigan! Local residents can get the shopping they need for themselves and their family at a fraction of the cost. For donations made via neighbourly we will be setting up a 'free items' station. Using surplus items from supermarkets as well as donations from businesses we are also helping to reduce food waste. Not only this, but all our members will have access to a range of free support services such as job clubs, computer training and much more. We currently support over 350 families in Wigan which represent over 1000 individuals.

We are a Church planted in an area of high social deprivation. We are passionate about providing support within our community including practical help. In pre Covid times our building is in use most days of the week and we are closely involved with community groups. We support and lead a variety of events aimed at decreasing poverty, loneliness, food hunger and emotional wellbeing. Examples involving our volunteers are luncheon club, community cafe, foodbank and feeding schemes during school holidays. We are aware of increased need at this time with much financial insecurity and we are also aware of food waste. Our reason for registration is to try to secure food that would otherwise be wasted to distribute to those in need at no cost. We distribute food collected from supermarkets every Wednesday morning, this runs alongside our community cafe which has become a place of welcome for anyone who wants to linger and chat. This has been important for some people who are suffering from isolation and a variety of issues. In addition we may use food to support our feeding schemes during school holidays.
