We redistribute surplus food from supermarkets to the local community and local charities. This not only saved food from landfill but also helps to build community. - What premises does your project operate from? Currently 38 Linkside Rd, L25 9NX. This is registered with EHO. We have just been offered one day a week in a local shop. We are also working with two local councillors (Mirna Juarez and Sharon Connor) to rent space in a local church hall in an evening too. - How do you identify service users and their needs? They approach us through our facebook page, word of mouth or other people/organisations direct them to ourselves. For example, Alice Bennett, an ex local councillor directed us to a lady with seven children. They also come to our Friday community event in Hunts Cross Gardens. - Are there any other services provided by your organisation other than food support? Our other aim is building community and providing opportunities for volunteering. - Is there a charge for the service(s) provided by your organisation? No - Do you currently collect surplus food from any other retailers? Yes – Tesco and a local Co op. - Has there been local press or similar that demonstrates your organisation's work in the local community? Not yet although the local councillors do share our facebook page. - Would it be possible to provide photographs of work that your organisation does in the local community? There are lots on our facebook page and Instagram page - Is your project a registered charity, registered CIC, social enterprise or non-profit organisation? We have made an application. - Have you partnered with other local good causes or council members who may be able to provide a reference? Chesnut Lodge School is a community special school in Widnes that caters for pupils with Complex Physical and Medical Difficulties as well as Cognition and Learning Difficulties. We cater for pupils from age 2-16 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC plan) as well as taking Vulnerable 2's and nursery age pupils on mainstream places. Chesnut Lodge offers a full curriculum that is tailored to meet the needs of individual pupils, both academically and medically. We work closely with medical professionals providing a range of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and many more. Our experienced staff work closely with parents and carers and other professionals to ensure that each child receives the curriculum and care that they require. Our current cohort has 62% of pupils in receipt of Free School Meals. Pupils in receipt of FSM and/or Pupil premium (66% of pupils) are targeted for any additional support. Over the last few years Neighbourly has enabled us to collect from Marks and Spencer, Aldi and B and Q in our local area. The school uses their surplus donations to ensure that children have access to additional food and resources in school where needed. As a school for complex physical and medical needs our costs are significantly higher than most schools and these donation's have a huge impact in school.

The Community Grocery supports those feeling the financial impact of COVID-19 and other circumstances to gain access to food and toiletry items. We know that many households in our local community have been feeling the financial impact of Covid-19 and so The Message Trust is partnering with Today's Community Church to bring the Community Grocery to Wigan! Local residents can get the shopping they need for themselves and their family at a fraction of the cost. For donations made via neighbourly we will be setting up a 'free items' station. Using surplus items from supermarkets as well as donations from businesses we are also helping to reduce food waste. Not only this, but all our members will have access to a range of free support services such as job clubs, computer training and much more. We currently support over 350 families in Wigan which represent over 1000 individuals.
