M&S St Helens

We work over two locations in St Helens. The first ‘Hope House’ is a town centre building which acts as a drop in centre providing basic needs services, support, advocacy and signposting to those experiencing homelessness, those at risk of homelessness and those seeking treatment for drug and alcohol misuse. Our service users are able to access a breakfast club five mornings a week, shower facilities and fresh clothing with access to laundry. Further support is available in the form of advice, signposting and referral to specialist support to help people move forward. We also provide access to IT and a phone as well as providing a correspondence address so that those who don't have stable accommodation can engage with mainstream services. Our second location in Atherton Street, acts as home to our Training Centre and Gateway Service. Here a bespoke course is available to support people with their self-esteem and confidence building individuals' aspirations and assertiveness to achieve their goals. Learners are also invited to engage with learning IT and our work club which supports people back into work. St. Helens Foodbank is administered from this centre with one of the hubs based at the Hope Centre and our other project, Baby Basics, works in partnership with health visitors to provide practical starter packs of new and donated essential items to mums who are unable to prepare for their new arrival.

Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die of un-diagnosed heart conditions. Since its formation in 1995, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) / sudden adult death (SAD). CRY supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by YSCD/SAD. CRY promotes and develops heart screening programmes and funds medical research. CRY publishes and distributes medical information written by leading cardiologists for the general public. CRY funds fast track referral, screening and cardiac pathology services at leading UK hospitals. The James Nicholas Foundation aims to work in collaboration with CRY to bring simple ECG testing to many individuals, within the local borough (St.Helens & surrounding areas). This testing will be available to individuals aged between 14 and 35 (the target population CRY's cardiologists have identified as a risk category). The James Nicholas Foundation was set up after James passed away suddenly at the age of 21 (4 days before his 22nd birthday) in October 2012, from an undetected heart condition. Each ECG (through CRY) currently costs around £35, these tests are not routine or available on the NHS. If you were to go through a private health care service you could be charged up to £800 for this simple, yet extremely effective testing. So, supporting a local and upcoming foundation like ours enables the testing free of charge (via foundation fundraising). This therefore means to prevent another family, group of friends/individuals dealing with the sudden loss of a loved one. The family and friends of James aim to raise funds to ensure testing is made available within the local vicinity. Opened in 1997, the Hospice is governed by a Board of Trustees, Chaired by Alan Chick and run on a day to day basis by Neil Wright, the Chief Executive, an experienced management team, over 120 staff and over 550 volunteers. The hospice could not function without the valuable contribution of it’s volunteers. The clinical team is led by Dr Paula Powell, Clinical Lead, and Chris Haywood, the Registered Manager and Director of Clinical Services. Together, with their Medical, Nursing and Allied Healthcare Professional teams, they are responsible for delivering the Hospice’s five main services, In-patient, Well Being, Out Patient, Therapy services and the Advance Care Planning Team.
