We founded The Cupboard Network in order to help prevent food waste in the community. We are horrified at how much perfectly good food goes to waste due to widely inaccurate use by/best before dates. We found ourselves with a lot of surplus food after collecting and distributing from various organisations, and thought we would offer it out into the community via our "community cupboard". We've quickly had to expand due to such a fantastic response from the community and we've been able to provide lots of food parcels to vulnerable people, whilst also tackling the war on waste! The cupboard is open to everyone, regardless of background or income as our main focus will always be to reduce the amount of food that goes to waste. We do ask for a small donation where possible if you come to collect from us; as little as £1 here and there helps us to continue to offer this service. We opened The Table Community Café in March 2023, providing free hot and cold meals and refreshments at our full table service café. We are a community hub and a registered charity led by local people. We serve a highly deprived community in South Sefton, Merseyside where we operate an anti-poverty programme supporting people in crisis and who are vulnerable due to resource and attachment poverties. We operate a range of services in support of families and vulnerable residents including a food programme and clothing exchange.

Compassion Acts supports adults and children facing hardship by providing emergency food through Southport Foodbank, in line with The Trussell guidelines. Alongside this, we run Food Pantries, a Community Market and offer benefits advice, including advocacy and support at benefit tribunals. Our projects are delivered across the North Sefton area. While the Foodbank provides vital emergency assistance for people in crisis, its support is designed to be short term. Many families and individuals continue to struggle once the immediate crisis has passed. Our Food Pantry helps bridge that gap by offering members the opportunity to shop for around £30 worth of groceries each week for just £5, choosing the items that best suit their household. Val turned to Compassion Acts after facing a long wait for her benefits. Referred first to the Foodbank and then to the Food Pantry, she found more than just practical support. "I was full of panic and anxiety, wondering how I was going to cope if I ended up on the street. The volunteers at the Food Pantry were lovely. It gave me back my confidence and self-esteem. Without going there and meeting people, who knows what could have happened?"
