Maggie’s caught me and I left with a plan but more importantly a smile on my face.” Nobody plans for cancer. We don't plan financially, we don't plan it into our careers, and we certainly don't plan emotionally. Maggie's Manchester is here to support anyone affected by cancer in and around Greater Manchester. Our centre is found in the grounds of The Christie hospital, and anyone using the hospital along with their friends and family can visit us to receive a wide range of support. Maggie's provides practical, social and emotional support. This ranges from financial support through our benefits adviser, to occupational advice from our vocational rehab specialist, or emotional support from professional cancer care specialists. Or sometimes, the support a person needs may just be a cup of tea and someone to talk to. We are here to meet the needs of the individual. Maggie's also has a programme of free activities, such as yoga, meditation, art sessions, and courses to help people deal with issues surrounding cancer such as stress or bereavement. All of our programme focuses on giving people back their control - something that cancer can sometimes take away. In 2017 Maggie's Manchester will support over 18,000 people. Kidscan is a children's cancer research charity based in Salford who look for new and improved treatments for children suffering with cancer. Every year 1,600 children in the UK are diagnosed with cancer and 1 in 5 children diagnosed with cancer don’t survive. Through ground-breaking research Kidscan is striving to change this, giving every child with cancer the treatment they need not only to survive but also to thrive. Cancer forms when one of the cells in the body changes and starts to grow and divide out of control. If the cancer is not treated then it will continue to grow, spreading through the body. To be successful, any treatment must kill the cancer cells or at least stop cancer cells dividing, without causing too much damage to healthy cells. In children this problem is even more difficult as children are naturally growing and cell division is part of the normal growth process. Many cancer treatments are aimed at killing cells that are dividing, but healthy cells can also be damaged, therefore giving rise to the short term side effects seen in both adults and children. However, in children damage to normal cells during therapy is both more serious and long lasting and these ‘late effects’ arise because of damage to the healthy tissues of a child’s body. The result of this can be impaired growth, impaired physical development, impaired emotional development and impaired IQ. Clearly if treatment could be made more specific this would have a major impact on patient care. We are looking to reduce these short and long term side effects whilst still retaining the effectiveness of treatment. Our aims are simple: to cure more children with cancer, to improve the treatment of children with cancer, to develop new treatments for childhood cancer and to be a source of information about childhood cancer. We receive no statutory funding and the continuation of our research relies solely on the support of businesses, trusts, donations from the public, street collections and Kidscan fundraising events. With your support we can continue our vital research and together we can create a world where every child diagnosed with cancer will survive and thrive.

Mind in Salford was set up in 1972 with the aim of campaigning and raising awareness of mental health issues across the city. Over the past 45 years we have listened and learned from the experiences within our community, and today we: • Provide advice, advocacy and support to anyone struggling with their mental health • Empower local people to engage with their communities, and improve wellbeing • Campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding What We Do Mind in Salford is a user-focused, mental health charity that offers friendly, accessible support and information, which makes a positive difference to the wellbeing and mental health of the people of Salford. We are an independent charity, and although we are affiliated to National Mind, we do not receive any funding from them. The core services we provide are: • Advocacy - Helping vulnerable people to express their views and concerns, access information and services, explore choices and options, and defend and promote their rights. • Welfare Rights and Debt Advice – Offering, free, independent and impartial advice, that helps with all aspects of benefits and debts. • Training - Delivering mental health awareness and wellbeing courses, mindfulness sessions, and advocacy training for individuals and organisations.   How Your Money Helps £4.25 covers the cost of a phone call with a trained debt advisor who can provide practical support and advice to release someone from the devastating effects debt is having on their lives. £13.50 provides mental health information booklets to 15 people, helping them to understand their symptoms and the treatment and support available. £42.85 funds a help session where a trained advocate empowers a vulnerable person in Salford to resolve an issue that is causing them mental distress. £350 covers the costs of a mental health awareness course for 30 people, giving them the skills and confidence to support someone who is struggling with their mental health. £1750 trains and empowers a Volunteer Mindfulness Champion to deliver free evidence based stress reduction sessions to hundreds of people in their community.
