HSDC - South Downs Campus
Waterlooville, UK
HSDC South Downs Campus, located in Waterlooville, Hampshire, is a large further education college serving approximately 3,500 students aged between 16–24, alongside adult learners. As part of the wider HSDC group, which also includes Havant Campus (approximately 1,300 students) and Alton College (approximately 1,500 students), South Downs plays an important role in delivering education, vocational training and career pathways for students across the region.
The campus offers a wide range of Vocational courses, T Levels and Apprenticeships designed to prepare students for employment and further study. Learning is highly practical and career focused, allowing students to develop industry-relevant skills in realistic working environments.
South Downs Campus is also home to several public-facing training facilities including Salon 74, The Restaurant and the Fitness Centre. These facilities provide valuable real-world experience for students while also serving the wider community. As a result, the campus welcomes daily visitors including local residents, parents, carers and external guests, making the college an active community hub within Waterlooville.
South Downs Campus is also home to our Animal Care department. Where students from all academic levels are given hands on experience caring for a wide range of animals and ensuring their needs are met. The department has a variety of animals ranging from chickens to lizards.
Student support is central to the college’s approach. In addition to their subject teachers, all students are assigned a dedicated Student Progress Mentor. Mentors support learners with academic progress, personal development and wellbeing, ensuring students have access to guidance and support throughout their time at college.
A large proportion of students attending South Downs Campus live in the nearby community of Leigh Park, which has been identified as one of the most deprived areas in the United Kingdom. In 2019, the Local Trust named Leigh Park as one of only six “Left Behind” neighbourhoods nationally. Approximately 33% of children in the area live in poverty, significantly higher than the Hampshire average.
Despite serving a population of around 27,500 residents, Leigh Park currently has only two food banks available to support the community. This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by many families whose young people attend the college.
HSDC South Downs Campus plays an important role not only in education but also in supporting the wellbeing, development and future opportunities of students from the surrounding community.
