Ruth Winston Community Centre
London, UK
The Ruth Winston Community Centre was established in 1961. Originally founded as the first centre in the country dedicated to those over 50, we have since expanded our services to welcome adults of all ages, backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities from the London Borough of Enfield, as well as parts of Haringey and Barnet. The Centre is a welcoming and inclusive space where members of the community can come together to combat loneliness, make new friends, stay fit and healthy and enjoy quality time with others. As part of our commitment to the community, we offer a free drop-in service for all members, where they can enjoy complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits. We are also fortunate to receive surplus food, which we distribute for free to our members to help reduce waste. The Centre also hosts a variety of classes in fitness, dance, languages, art, bridge, and technology (including computer and smartphone use). We organize social events such as quiz nights, a film club, and coffee mornings. Furthermore, we offer hairdressing and chiropody services at reduced rates. The Centre is entirely self-funded and operates with a small team of just three paid staff (two of whom are part-time), supported by a dedicated group of volunteers who help keep our services running.
