Around Again Food & Basics Poverty

Birmingham, UK

***The larger sums listed on the donations page include some one-off grants and combined fundraising amounts - all sizes of donations welcome*** Since 2002 we have been supporting local people in one of the most deprived 5% - 10% deprived areas in England. We operate & deliver a food pantry (Around Again); employment & skills support; health and well-being support; disability support; social enterprise; community centre; parent groups; chatty cafe; digital inclusion; money advice; and work in partnership with other voluntary and community sector organisations. Our intervention workers and volunteers work tirelessly to help marginalised individuals and groups. Over the last few weeks we have seen an increased demand for Around Again due to COVID-19 and we need your support. Unfortunately, we will be needed long after the lockdown as the effects of the virus manifest into increased poverty. All money raised will go directly to Around Again to pay for food, non-food essentials, transportation / distribution of food and cleaning equipment. We have been supplying baby products, tampons, toothpaste, soap; and treats for children, where we have been donated items such as Easter Eggs. In reality, many more families are close to needing temporary support and projects such as this provide a vital lifeline. Our latest support includes family breakfast packs - which we can supply to a family for 1 week and only costs the same as a posh coffee...about £3! Thank you for anything you can do!

Cockshut Hill School Breakfast Club

Birmingham, UK

We are providing bagels to all students that want one on entry to the school gate. We had previously identified that lots of students had been arriving to school eating inappropriate foods (energy drinks/sweets) and we wanted to provide a healthy nutritious start to the day and help to improve students' concentration and behaviour by doing so. Since the provision of our free bagels, we noticed that our regular users were arriving without the unhealthy snacks. We have carried out case studies on our regular users and found that their teachers had noticed dramatic shifts in behaviour, from increased concentration to becoming more calm socially. We also noticed increases in school attendance of some of the children that took a breakfast. As well as providing a grab and go breakfast service, we provide bagels to our SEND students who are welcomed into school with a breakfast with their SENDCO and got the chance to be nurtured by staff and as a result these students reported becoming more settled in school and an upshift in attendance.
