Ronald McDonald House Camberwell

London, UK

Ronald McDonald House provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation at 14 specialist children's hospitals across the UK so that families can remain united and close to their seriously ill child. We are an independent charity, receive no funding from Government bodies and rely solely on the support of our families, businesses and community. Our Camberwell House, located just 5 minutes from King’s College Hospital, supports families from all over the UK. It is equipped with kitchens, playrooms, laundry facilities, has communal lounges and a garden so that families can feel at home. Families can stay as long as their child is being treated, whether that is for a couple of days or for years. Our aim is to create a safe environment where families can focus in helping their child get better without worrying about financial implications such as hotel, travel and food and being able to spend some time together therefore strengthening family stability and mental wellbeing.

Walworth Living Room

London, UK

Our original community space, Pembroke House, was founded in 1885 by students from Pembroke College Cambridge. They took up residence in Walworth, to live, work and connect with locals, gaining insight into the inequalities and deprivation that affected (and still affects) the area. Over time Pembroke House's community offer and building developed to become home to a wide range of activities, including a weekly lunch club, a Dance Programme and the Pembroke Academy of Music. Our second site, the Walworth Living Room, situated 5 minutes walk away, opened in 2019 as a more experimental community space. It houses a Community Cafe, an ever-evolving social activity schedule and a Community Fridge; the ultimate goal being to create a safe space where residents can feel a sense of trust, ownership and belonging. Together with residents, voluntary groups and local organisations, we're trying to build a Walworth in which people can connect, learn from one another, and work together towards a more equal society - and food will play a vital role in this. The Community Fridge & Cafe will provide opportunities for locals to create new friendships, give, take and share food, and feel a part of something bigger than themselves.
