We redistribute surplus food from supermarkets to the local community and local charities. This not only saved food from landfill but also helps to build community. - What premises does your project operate from? Currently 38 Linkside Rd, L25 9NX. This is registered with EHO. We have just been offered one day a week in a local shop. We are also working with two local councillors (Mirna Juarez and Sharon Connor) to rent space in a local church hall in an evening too. - How do you identify service users and their needs? They approach us through our facebook page, word of mouth or other people/organisations direct them to ourselves. For example, Alice Bennett, an ex local councillor directed us to a lady with seven children. They also come to our Friday community event in Hunts Cross Gardens. - Are there any other services provided by your organisation other than food support? Our other aim is building community and providing opportunities for volunteering. - Is there a charge for the service(s) provided by your organisation? No - Do you currently collect surplus food from any other retailers? Yes – Tesco and a local Co op. - Has there been local press or similar that demonstrates your organisation's work in the local community? Not yet although the local councillors do share our facebook page. - Would it be possible to provide photographs of work that your organisation does in the local community? There are lots on our facebook page and Instagram page - Is your project a registered charity, registered CIC, social enterprise or non-profit organisation? We have made an application. - Have you partnered with other local good causes or council members who may be able to provide a reference? The Market Place opened in October 2016 and is owned and run by South Liverpool Homes (SLH), a locally-based registered social landlord in South Liverpool. The shop works with FareShare and other local sources of surplus food and household goods, allowing residents on a low income to gain access to essential goods at a vastly-reduced price. The shop opens two days a week and runs on a membership basis. Once registered, The Market Place members can purchase £15 worth of groceries per week for just £3. The Market Place was set up by a small project team at South Liverpool Homes and is run solely by volunteers. Beyond bringing low-cost groceries to those in dire need in the community, we aim to make The Market Place a friendly, accessible venue where local people can find out about the range of services that SLH provides. We aim to attract more volunteers to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability. Volunteering is a great way for local people to learn new skills and become more work ready, linking with South Liverpool Homes’ existing employability projects. We are currently supplied by FareShare and other local providers but wish to ensure the ongoing supply of quality goods for our customers by linking with more foodbanks and sources of surplus goods. We are also keen to link up with other projects with similar aims in order to share best practice and learn how to make The Market Place as good as it can be. Finally, we would like raise the profile of The Market Place both locally and nationally so that more people can benefit from the services it provides.

At Speke House, we provide supported accommodation for up to 50 homeless veterans at any one time. The majority of which have been street homeless and suffer from a variety of health issues. The aim of the charity is to help veterans transition from military to civilian life and provide support on self-care and living skills, employment and health and wellbeing. Often our residents are in financial hardship and struggle to maintain a basic daily routine. This often results in them being unable to cater and care for themselves which impacts further on their mental health. Many of our residents have no family or supporting networks and rely heavily on the support offered on site. At the scheme, we try to encourage communal engagement and provide a meal whenever we can. However, as a charity we struggle to be able to fund this and seek support from other organisations who are willing to contribute towards the positive transition for our veterans. Since 2013, the charity has supported over 575 veterans (at June 2022). 90% of residents come to Launchpad from a homeless background. On average over the last five years, 61% of residents successfully moved on to settled accommodation, either living independently, reunited with family or with the support they need and 41% of residents gained employment during their time at Launchpad.
