The Co-operative Food - Portslade, Abinger Road

We are a charity non-profit pre-school where families on low income often bring their children as we always have spaces for funded children. Plus all our fees are kept low to support all families in our community. We rely heavily on donations of food for snack times and resources used for sensory play, in order to keep costs low. We provide childcare for children aged 2 to 5 years old. We have been running for over 40 years in our community and now have parents that attended here when they were young, now bringing their children here. We have loyal staff who work well over any hours that they are paid for and volunteers that help the preschool flourish. Wish such a dedicated team we have created a welcoming family feel to the preschool and with support from local businesses we hope to be here serving our community for many years to come.

BrightStore is a community grass roots level food project run by and for local people. It's a very reasonably priced membership scheme. We offer high quality, affordable food including bread, eggs, fruit and vegetables along with other essential items. We are a solidarity scheme, which means that people can pay more if possible, to support those less able to pay. In return for a very affordable weekly shop, members who sign up to be part of the project are encouraged to get involved in helping to run it. Roles include managing deliveries, working with suppliers and setting up the weekly store.

Shoreham FoodBank is a charity founded on Christian principles; we do not think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. People, individuals, companies or shoppers, donate non-perishable in-date food. Volunteers then sort this food to check that it’s in date and pack it into bags ready to be given to people in need. Over 30 people give up their time to volunteer with Shoreham FoodBank. Shoreham FoodBank partners with a wide range of care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers and the Citizens Advice Bureau who identify people in crisis, and issue them with a red foodbank voucher. Prospective Clients then bring their red voucher to our Distribution Centre in Shoreham Free Church Hall, just north of the Shoreham Station railway crossing gates, where it is exchanged for three days’ supply of emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink and are able to signpost them to agencies if need be, to help solve longer-term issues. We are part of the nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.
