Pete's Dragons
Exmouth, UK
Pete's Dragons operates a bespoke suicide bereavement service across Devon and Cornwall and also regularly gives telephone support across the rest of the UK where similar services are absent. Working in close alliance with local police we are often supporting a family from as early as 48 hours after a death. With the short and long term impact of suicide bereavement typically including PTSD, mental health issues, future criminality and personal suicidality it is imperative that all those affected receive timely and appropriate advice and support in the aftermath in a way which recognises their personal uniqueness and circumstances. Suicide bereavement is grief with the volume turned up, fractures families, tests resilience to it's limits and dramatically changes circumstances; it is often unexpected and always sudden and traumatic. Pete's Dragons also spends time trying to prevent suicide from happening in the first place by regularly attending community groups, organisations and event to raise awareness, encouraging people to talk about the subject and educate around it. We are currently proud to be involved in the training of all blue light services in the South West of the country to be skilled in suicide prevention techniques in order to enable them to look after themselves their colleagues and the wider community. The importance of this is in saving lives. There is a link between suicide bereavement and future suicide but research shows this is significantly lowered with appropriate support. Pete's Dragons also delivers suicide awareness and prevention courses to organisations and the community.
