The Moving On Project supporting young people.

Fareham, UK

The Moving on Project is a specialist counselling service for 11-25 year olds living in Fareham, Gosport and the surrounding areas. We have been successfully delivering community based support to young people, parents and families for 30 years. Our mission is to provide quality and confidential counselling, mental health and wellbeing support. The work that we undertake is delivered both in local schools and colleges, doctor surgeries and at our centre in Fareham. We believe that no-one should suffer alone and that is why our qualified counsellors help around 450 youngsters every year. Our goal is early intervention and to empower young people to have the tools and strategies they need to cope with the challenges that they are facing. The consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, resulting in the impairment of physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling adults lives.  As an organisation we value safety, integrity and community. More children and young people than ever are struggling with mental health issues. We reach people who have been impacted adversely by the current situation, providing early intervention, reducing waiting times and preventing escalation of poor mental health in later life. We focus on building resilience, personal development and creative coping strategies, enabling them to manage through these difficult times. The Moving on Project has been experiencing a high demand and are now seeing an increase in cases relating to suicidal thoughts, self-harm and eating issues (and many other issues). Last year we offered over 1848 counselling appointments to young people. Some of the issues that people are reaching out to The Moving on Project for help include; sleep problems, panic attacks, depression, low mood, anxiety, self harm, eating disorders, bereavement, loss, family break ups, relationships, bullying and suicidal thoughts. We are also seeing the emergence of new issues in those with no history of mental health problems. Our goal is to be able to support every young person in our community who want counselling, but who are often facing barriers including the current long waiting lists for the NHS.

Disabled Sailors Association

Gosport, UK

We enable disabled people, irrespective of their disabilities, to safely and actively sail our fleet of specially adapted boats. 30 years of sailing with and consulting people of all ages and disabilities - invisible, physical and learning - has enabled us to come up with a range of adaptations to enable everyone to actively sail our fleet of yacht, catamaran, dinghies and wetas. This is unique in the sailing world, as even organisations claiming to offer sailing for disabled people often can't cope with complex needs and many disabled people are merely spectators on boats. As a result, many other organisations that are unable to help people with complex needs, refer those people on to us. Besides providing safe recreation and fun we also offer sail training to some of our sailors, giving them the opportunity to obtain Royal Yacht Association qualifications. Internationally recognised, these qualifications sometimes lead to job opportunities, which can be life-changing for our sailors. We also offer the travel component for young, disabled people, to enable them to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and obtain their bronze award alomg with their able-bodied class mates. All our sailors are invited to bring their family and carers to enjoy the experience with them. Testimony to our success is that around 60% of our sailors choose to regularly sail with us. As well as offering sailing days in the UK, on the Solent and in Spain, we loan out our dinghies to individuals who would not normally be in a position to afford to purchase their own boats. We pay the insurance and maintenance costs and our only stipulation is that they must be in a position to make regular use of the boat and, if possible, to invite their disabled friends and family to try the boat, to make sailing accessible to even more people. This scheme is particularly beneficial to people who live a long way away from the South coast of the UK.
