Non-perishable, in-date food is donated by the public in a range of places, such as schools, churches, businesses, supermarket collection points and libraries across the Vale of Glamorgan. It is then sorted by volunteers and packed into emergency food parcels to be given to people in need. Every day people in the UK go hungry for a variety of reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems

Friends of Herbert Thompson is dedicated to reducing the impact of poverty and improving outcomes for children and families in Ely and Caerau, Cardiff. We provide practical support, food provision, clothing, learning opportunities and community activities that help families thrive and create stronger, more connected communities. Ely and Caerau are among the most disadvantaged areas of Cardiff, with many families experiencing financial hardship and food insecurity. Through initiatives including Herbie's Hut Community Food Pantry, Thompson's Treasures Community Clothing Shop, family learning programmes and community events, we support over 2,000 families each year. Our current priority is to embed sustainable projects within Herbert Thompson Primary School that reflect the Welsh Government's Community Focused Schools approach, placing the school at the heart of the community. We work to reduce the impact of poverty, improve wellbeing, strengthen family engagement and create better outcomes for children and families through accessible support, learning opportunities and community partnerships.
