Building communities and strengthening families

The objective of the charity is the relief of poverty, both material and emotional in England & Wales and abroad through: the person to person involvement of its voluntary members engaged in befriending and through 'special works' , which are projects established to address specific needs in the local community. We are the branch (known as a Conference) based in Springfield, Chelmsford. We work with families on low income or on benefits and provide regular food parcels, using the food collected from Neighbourly. We also small stock of emergency parcels ready to be delivered to people who are being moved into temporary accommodation, again using food donations collected from stores using the Neighbourly scheme. All food parcels are given free of charge and any surplus food is donated to The Little Free Pantry scheme. Every Christmas and New Year we collect food from supermarkets, with over 200 families provided for last year thanks to a large group of volunteers giving up their time. Some of the food collected this summer will be distributed at our Family Fun Day, for children who will not have a holiday. We work closely with other charities across Chelmsford and share surplus food with them. This means that collected food does not go to waste.

Helping Families Thrive At Home-Start Essex, we believe every child deserves the best possible start in life. We support parents and caregivers to feel less isolated, build confidence in themselves and their parenting, and find practical ways to manage everyday challenges. Through trusted relationships and tailored support—including home visits, family groups, wellbeing services, and school-readiness programmes—we’re here to help families grow stronger together. Who We Support We support families from all backgrounds across Mid, South & West Essex, helping them navigate some of life’s most challenging moments. Our core focus is on families with at least one child under the age of 5, but some of our services may also be available to families with primary school-aged children—please contact us to check availability. We support families who may be experiencing: Mental or physical health challenges Social isolation Physical or learning disabilities Living in poverty Domestic abuse Rehoming or temporary accommodation Bereavement Our aim is to provide compassionate, practical support that makes a real difference. We would benefit the most from surplus food for our supported families, many of whom are living in difficult circumstances, poor housing, limited income. We also need volunteers to help us support these families. All our volunteers are fully trained and DBS checked and visit/work with families in their own home to offer practical and emotional support.
