ALDI DISS

Community led, volunteer organisation. We aim to reduce food waste in Diss and surrounding villages and get food on plates not in bins! We previously operated under the name Community Fridge for Diss. But in 2024 we changed the name to Diss Community Larder as we now take only ambient temperature food stuffs, and no longer operate a fridge or freezer (due to funding from Town Council being withdrawn when business electricity prices rocketed). We are a a project based on waste prevention, therefore we welcome anybody who wishes to attend either or both of our two handout evenings each week. We do not make any charges for the food that people collect from us. We have a Facebook group, and post regularly on our town group page. The Facebook link is provided elsewhere on this listing. We operate without any regular funding. We raise money through raffles in order to meet the expenses of public liability insurance. We already collect food surplus thanks to Neighbourly, and have applied for one grant, awaiting response. Currently, we collect food surplus from Aldi & Lidl’s through Neighbourly, and Tesco via FareShare. We collect from local independent bakeries by private arrangement.

The Shelf: A Social Supermarket. The Shelf is more than a place to shop — it’s a welcoming space where dignity, choice, and community come first. Stocked with affordable essentials and rescued surplus, it helps stretch budgets while reducing waste. But what makes The Shelf truly special is the atmosphere: friendly faces, thoughtful touches, and a sense of belonging. As it's part of Citizens Advice Diss and Thetford our clients have access to all the help that CA can give too! Membership is £3.50 and that gives you access to essentials and healthy food for below supermarket prices. We have a small army of volunteers that help run The Shelf.

Solo housing was established in 1985 to meet the needs of single homeless people in east anglia. we run a lodgings scheme for people who do not require ongoing support, and supported housing for those who need ongoing support to sustain their tenancy. solo housing became a registered provider with the homes and communities agency in March 2012 (registration no. 4696).
