ALDI MOTHERWELL

We operate a free fresh food distribution service every Monday morning to needy families and individuals in the Motherwell area. Some suffer from addiction problems others just find life difficult. Our numbers are increasing and we now have in excess of 80 people attending regularly every Monday

Homeless Project Scotland is a fledgling charity, set up in October 2019 by a handful of volunteers that wanted to give homeless people on the streets  of our towns and cities hot drinks and food during the harsh winter nights. Initially we set out with backpacks of flasks and sandwiches walking the streets of Glasgow and Edinburgh to ensure that anyone found struggling was able at least to get a hot drink and something to eat. Within a short period of time, we managed to recruit a team of volunteers who began to distribute a selection of food, essential toiletries and warm clothes.  We were  fortunate to enlist the support from major companies such as Aldi, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Marks & Spencer, who have kindly donated supplies of food which we collect  during the day and then distribute to homeless shelters throughout Glasgow, Edinburgh and Lanarkshire in the evenings. Recently we were generously given free use of a van from Arnold  Clark which has enabled us to increase our collections and deliveries. Within six months we also managed to buy and renovate an old trailer which we use to provide a soup kitchen in Glasgow city centre three nights a week. The Covid-19 crisis has forced us off the streets and we have adapted our services to continue to support the homeless and vulnerable by providing home-cooked meals prepared by our volunteers , which we deliver weekly to homeless projects around Glasgow and Lanarkshire. 2,500 Weekly. A grant from Foundation Scotland has enabled us to set up a 24 hour telephone helpline. Cash for kids have provided funding  for food parcels, top up cards for utilities and mobile phones. We have also been able to provide mobile phones to the most vulnerable allowing them to access help and support services.  A grant from the William Grant Foundation has made it possible  to purchase office equipment, enabling us to  improve and expand our services to an ever increasing client base. Betel is a safe and inspiring place where men and women can come free of charge and overcome drug and alcohol addiction. We're helping addicts in 24 countries and 100 cities. Here in the UK, we have around 280 men and women in our care and we've begun a welcoming new centre in Motherwell. Betel is a self funding, non profitable charity. We do not receive government funding - instead, we teach new skills such as gardening and tree surgery, upholstery, and furniture restoration. In turn, this generates an income and empowers our recovering addicts to pay for their own recovery. This strengthens their self-worth, confidence and restores a sense of hope for the future. I myself was an addict and alcoholic. I entered the doors of Betel in 2006, lost, frightened, underweight, and with no hope for the future. But the love of people and the generosity of others encouraged me that life could be better. Ten years down the line, I'm drug free and alcohol free. What's more, I'm now married and I'm continuing to live and work with those who are less fortunate. We're a large charity but very small in comparison to the need there is out there within our country. We have and will continue to see men and women break free from addiction. To achieve this, we need your help! We hope to accommodate 20 to 25 adults here in Motherwell centre and will hopefully open another where there's great need. Eventually, our vision is to have a centre in every city so we can empower more people to overcome their addictions. All our residents are peer led by volunteers like myself that have gone through and overcome addiction. They know they aren't alone and can achieve what they set their hearts and minds on, as we have.
