Burnley Community Kitchen will use food as the catalyst for delivering change in people's lives. Burnley as a town is in the top 20% of deprived districts in the UK, with 2 wards reaching the top 10% of deprived areas nationally. Therefore, general health is statistically worse than other districts of the UK, with 23.4% of children being classified as obese by year 6 age and ‘holiday hunger’ being an issue for those children who are provided with free school meals in term time. Many people in Burnley rely on food bank donations and many experience long periods of hunger.

Colne Citadel is situated in a former Salvation Army building in Colne town centre. We are a charity run by a dedicated team of volunteers to serve all members of our local community without prejudice. By providing a safe, welcoming environment we aim to reduce social isolation and improve the wellbeing of our visitors. We are fortunate to have strong links with local recovery services and Elisha house- a residential recovery project in Colne. We also provide volunteering opportunities for individuals. Colne Citadel opens Mon and Fridays 10-2pm, wed 1-3 pm and sat morning 10-12 as an informal 'drop-in' centre for refreshments and company, We serve bacon butties Monday mornings, lunch Fridays 12-1 pm and cooked breakfasts sat 10-12. Tea and coffee is 50p, pasties and cakes courtesy of Gregg's bakery are free when available. Tesco kindly donate surplus bakery goods. We are also very grateful to Aldi supermarket in Colne for supporting us with surplus food. We hold a craft group for individuals with learning difficulties Mondays 10-2 pm (please book),women's group Wed 1-3pm , and a bingo club Thursday afternoon 1-3pm for elderly members of the community. Emerging futures hold a support group thurs 1-2.30 for families of those suffering from addiction. Hand-in-hand support group is held Friday afternoons 1-3pm and open to all. We have a free professional counselling service available for those over eighteen years and now have a team of eight dedicated volunteer counsellors. This year we were fortunate to receive funding from the National lottery (Awards for All) to continue and develop our counselling service. We also received funding from the Eric Wright foundation trust to commence mindfulness courses which we hope to start later this year. We try to buy products from a charity 'Inkind direct' to keep our costs down. We have recently made a new training room which we are hoping groups will make good use of for courses etc. We have purchased a projector for educational projects. Our building is in good condition but could do with redecoration in the kitchen and lounge areas and some new furniture which we hope to raise funds for in the near future. We have a nice garden area and shelter to the rear dedicated to a local teenager - The James Goodship memorial garden which was made by James' family and friends. Disabled access is to the side of the building.
