Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust

Welshpool, UK

Since 1982, the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust has been the leading voluntary organisation promoting wildlife conservation in Montgomeryshire. The trust currently manages and cares for 19 nature reserves within the county, totalling some 500ha in area. These reserves are a showcase of some of Montgomeryshire's finest remnants of prime wildlife habitat. The trust provides many opportunities for members and the wider public to get 'hands on' with wildlife conservation. These are delivered through a diverse range of fun-filled community and educational projects and outreach events at our nature reserves, schools and local green spaces as well as through regular volunteering sessions. These varied projects and sessions support the trust's aims, while engaging people of all ages and backgrounds through a variety of practical hands-on tasks, helping them to feel connected to their natural world and strengthening a sense of personal responsibility to our environment. Volunteers are the 'lifeblood' of any voluntary organisation and our volunteers play a vital role in all aspects of the trust's day-to-day operations, from holding a post as trustee, to attending our work party days or even taking over the management of an entire reserve like the 'Friends Of Severn Farm Pond' volunteers. This group of MWT volunteers meet weekly at the Severn Farm Pond Nature reserve in Welshpool, Powys, undertaking reserve management and improvement tasks and even putting on events at this accessible local green space. Their tireless and valued input has won them a Green Flag Award for this much-loved community site for the last 2 years. Their activity has strengthened partnerships with local businesses, bringing economic benefits that can support projects and improvements, and with the wider community bringing new interest and more visitors to the site.
