St Giles Hospice is a registered charity offering high-quality specialist care free of charge for people living with diseases which are terminal or incurable as well as providing support for their families and carers. Patients come from across the hospice's catchment area, which ranges from Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Atherstone in the east, to Cannock in the west – and from Burton and Uttoxeter in the north, to Sutton Coldfield and Coleshill in the south. Care is offered at the hospice's centres in Whittington and Sutton Coldfield and in patients' own homes across the region. St Giles spends over £10 million a year providing its specialist services and with little more than a third of this funded by the Government, the registered charity relies heavily on donations and income generation from the local community. Our history St Giles Hospice is a registered charity founded in 1983 by the Reverend Paul Brothwell, originally to improve the care of local people dying with cancer. We now support people in our community whose illnesses may not be curable such as cancer, motor neurone disease, heart failure, MS and respiratory disease. We also offer support for families and helpers. Our dedicated team provides individually-tailored care either at the hospice or in patients’ own homes across our communities. The range of specialist services is provided free of charge to those who need it. Although St Giles receives some funding from the Government, we rely heavily on donations and fundraising. Our aim We are very clear in what we aim to do at St Giles Hospice. We understand that caring for one person to another is a very personal experience, not only to the individual but also the surrounding family members. We engage with people and the local community to tackle the taboos associated with illness, dying and grieving. We actively listen and learn from our practice and strive to improve what we do, alongside sharing what we know to those who wish to learn from us. We are pro-active in raising money to help fund our ability to care, all with the help of our carers and volunteers who work tirelessly to provide opportunities for families and friends to honour the lives of their loved ones. All of this is achievable for a number of factors, we have a wonderful web of connections and friendships but a big chunk of this is down to the excellent team we have who run and maintain the charity, those who specialise in creating these partnerships to help us fund our charity. Quality of our care St Giles Hospice was awarded the highest possible accolade of ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in January 2020. Our little boy, Carter, was unfortunately diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at only 4 years old in January 2016. The journey has been incredibly long - over 3.5 years to date & extremely hard for Carter & all of us. I set up the Carter the Brave charity in April 2016. Our aim is to help other children on this journey & raise funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital & Childhood Cancer related causes. The total fund of the charity now stands at just over £160,000 which we are absolutely delighted about. We have won awards from BCH for being fundraisers of the year & have been named charity champions a number of times. Our events have been so varied – balls, concerts, sales, kids fun days, sponsored runs, bed party you name it we have done it! So far we have purchased the handsfree Vocera system across ward & clinic, 3 IV Vein Finders, Mobile Ear & Throat Devices, DVD players & DVDs for clinic, 200 AMAZON vouchers for the newly diagnosed & finally we were so pleased to donate £8000 to Round Table Children’s Wish which helps fulfil the dreams of children with cancer who are either critically or terminally ill. We have just concluded talks with BCH about funding 7 mobile entertainment units for the ward which will bring so much joy to the children who are confined to isolation. But my next focus is research – in particular causation & work towards gentler treatments for children like Carter. The treatment has been gruelling for Carter & other children. Carter is currently in remission but the chance of relapse is quite high – 1 in 4 so we are not out of the woods but we did enjoy him ringing the bell. Carter has been a member of David Lloyd since he was a baby & was enjoying swimming lessons at the time of diagnosis. We are so delighted to link up with this fantastic club & work together with members & the team on some fundraising.

We Love Lichfield is a local fund that provides small grants to a wide range of voluntary projects based in Lichfield District. We raise money through business and personal donations and fund raising events and twice a year invite groups to apply for funding upto £1000. Think of We Love Lichfield as a pension fund for the district. All money is invested through a permanent endowment fund and the interest and dividends are given out every year. Our aim is to give away £50,000 every year. WLL is managed by registered charity The Community Foundation For Staffordshire on behalf of We Love Lichfield in line with charity commission guidelines.
