The Lullaby Trust is a charity that saves babies’ lives and supports bereaved families. Around 3 babies a week still die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and we are committed to bringing that number down to zero. Through educating parents on how they can reduce the risk of SIDS and investing over £12 million in research, we have played a key role in reducing the number of babies who die from SIDS by 82%, saving the lives of more than 29,000 babies. Each year we train thousands of health professionals to support parents in sleeping their baby safely. We campaign tirelessly to raise awareness of SIDS and ensure our life saving advice reaches all parents. The Lullaby Trust supports bereaved families, through our helpline and befriending scheme. Our work with the NHS to provide a Care of Next Infant Programme (CONI) offers a lifeline to bereaved families expecting a new baby.

St Leonard’s Hospice provides specialist palliative care and support for people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses, within a relaxed, friendly environment where every patient is recognised and treated as an individual. Our care also extends to families and carers, and our patients enjoy the best possible quality of life. We have a Hospice@Home team, Sunflower Centre where holistic care enhances the quality of life of our patients, as well as a Bereavement team and Spiritual Care

The Island has been operating as a charity since August 2007. We support vulnerable 8 to 13 year-olds and disabled young people up to 18 years of age in York who are struggling to cope at home, at school, or in the wider community, or who are experiencing difficult transitions in their lives. The Island links these young people with volunteer mentors with whom they meet on a weekly basis over the course of a year (or longer if required). This allows them to develop supportive, ongoing relationships, whilst also providing then with the undivided attention and 'islands of space and time' they need to increase their confidence and self-esteem, participate in worthwhile recreational activities in the community, and move forward in their lives. In a society where children are exposed to the harsh realities of the adult world from an ever-younger age, there are precious few support systems in place to help them deal with the difficult experiences and emotions they face and, as a result vulnerability to further challenges if no early intervention is provided. The Island is unique in York, being the only agency to offer mentoring to this specific age group for a broad range of vulnerabilities. The Island is a series of projects for the community provided by the community, offering mentoring services to local young people using volunteers from the local schools, universities and the community. The Island seeks to raise funds locally through various fund raising events as well as applying for grants from other trusts and donors for continuing this vital service.
