Urban Goodies CIC is not just another organisation - it's a vibrant force for change in our community. We're on a mission to combat food poverty, promote healthy eating, and uplift those who are disadvantaged. At Urban Goodies, we transform surplus food from supermarkets into nutritious food parcels, delivering them across the city using eco-friendly transport. This innovative approach not only reduces food waste but ensures that our neighbours facing food insecurity have access to wholesome meals. Since our start in 2016, we've been more than just a hospitality business. Operating from a humble kitchen, we quickly realised that for many on low incomes, accessing nutritious food is a daily challenge. With fast food being so cheap, too many in our community are paying the price with their health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we stepped up, providing thousands of nutritious takeaway meals to those in need. The response was overwhelming - people not only wanted more of our food but they also wanted to be part of our mission. They joined our cookery sessions, volunteered, and became part of a movement. In February 2021, driven by our deep commitment to ensure no one in our city goes hungry, we evolved into a Community Interest Company. But we’re not just about food; we’re about inclusion. Social exclusion isn't just a term - it’s a reality that many in our community face daily. For those with lower incomes and limited access to transportation, simple things like getting to the store or attending a job interview can be daunting. We understand that, and we’re addressing it. By tackling these access barriers head-on, Urban Goodies CIC is breaking down the walls of exclusion, making sure everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can participate fully in community life. With the benefit of a grant from Hubbub we managed to purchase and open a Community Fridge in August 2022. The aim of the fridge was to fight food waste and support local people. It does this by collecting leftover food from businesses, and then making it available to local residents and community groups. This includes individuals with limited access to affordable fresh and nutritious food. 4031 persons have benefitted from our community fridge per week since July 2022 which relates to over 7 tonnes of food. Our research via our dedicated members page has enabled us to understand our members' specific needs and spending habits, allowing us to create a bespoke food delivery service that cuts their grocery bills by up to 50%. This service is especially beneficial for those who rely on expensive local shops or supermarkets, where nutritious options are often unaffordable. The Stoke Aldermoor Community Foundation is a fully volunteer-led registered charity. Our organisation manages the Aldermoor LIFE Centre, a community hub in Stoke Aldermoor, Coventry, which serves as a vital resource for local residents. We provide various services, activities, and facilities that support all residents, offering a space for recreation and leisure and fostering inclusivity and engagement through diverse activities. Our mission is to create a vibrant community centre that promotes inclusivity and engagement. We aim to cultivate an environment where individuals of all ages and backgrounds feel welcome and empowered to participate in a wide range of activities. Central to our vision is providing facilities that cater to various interests and preferences, ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy. To support this mission, we offer a variety of services designed to meet our community's diverse needs. Our amenities include several indoor and outdoor spaces used for various activities. We also hire out our facilities for events and meetings, enabling local groups and individuals to gather and collaborate. Our Community Café offers affordable hot meals that are both tasty and nutritious. This creates a space for local people to socialise outside their usual circles, helping to break down social barriers and reduce social isolation, fostering a stronger and more connected community. Throughout the year, we host multiple family-friendly events, providing opportunities for community members to come together, celebrate, and enjoy shared experiences. One cornerstone initiative, the Stoke Aldermoor Food Hub, stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment. Here, we confront the spectre of food insecurity head-on, extending a lifeline to individuals and families grappling with financial hardship. Since its inception in March 2020, our food hub has served as a vital resource, offering sustenance to those facing the daunting challenges of food poverty. Especially with the ongoing cost of living crisis, it serves over 280 people per week on average. Through our dedication and diverse offerings, we continue to strengthen our community, ensuring that every resident feels supported, connected, and empowered.
