- General charitable purposes - The advancement of health or saving of lives - Recreation - Children/young people - Elderly/old people - Provides buildings/facilities/open space We ask B&Q to help us by contributing any clearance plants and household items that we can use or sell at our Village Hall Spring Fair to help raise funds for the upkeep of Blencarn & Kirkland Village Hall. Our village hall is a registered charity which provides a much needed hub for the rural community of Blencarn and Kirkland. The Hall, which we raise funds to maintain and operate, is a hub where we hold multiple fundraising and social events. Examples include Coffee mornings, a Spring Fair a Summer BBQ, craft clubs, book clubs, whist drives amongst other social gatherings. Without funds for the valuable resource of the Village Hall those in our community might suffer poor health, loss of independence and lower quality of life. This is why we are asking Neighbourly to hear our plea & hopefully contribute any goods from clearance plants to household goods to help our Village Hall survive. With many of our villagers’ elderly, the village Hall is their only meeting place for the Whist, book clubs & coffee mornings & these social gatherings helps address loneliness among our vulnerable groups. At Blencarn & Kirkland Village Hall we believe regular activities play a key role in supporting wellbeing. So whether it is Art classes, Quizzes or Whist, taking part in some of these shared activities at the Village Hall bring both physical and mental health benefits. As well as keeping people active, these activities create opportunities for social interaction. Spending time with others, sharing interests and simply having something to look forward to during the week can make a big difference to how people in our community feel & give people here a sense of purpose & connection. For some residents, especially older people who live alone or no longer drive, the village hall can provide an important social lifeline. Neighbours meet & help each other at the Village Hall & community support naturally grows. Personally, I’ve found that being involved in and running community events helped through difficult times.

The Food Rescue Group, Penrith takes a practical, community-led approach to tackling food waste and promoting sustainable living across the town. As communities face growing challenges from climate change, resource depletion, and ecological imbalance, the importance of the Penrith initiative is clear. A central focus of our work is addressing food waste, a critical issue that leads to the unnecessary loss of valuable resources and contributes significantly to methane emissions from landfill. Tackling this challenge is both an environmental necessity and a moral responsibility, as redistributing surplus food can provide meaningful support to local families and individuals. We work closely with local producers and retailers to ensure surplus food is used rather than wasted. These partnerships help businesses reduce disposal costs while delivering positive environmental outcomes for the wider community. Pickup and distribution in Penrith are coordinated by Suruchi Kansagra, who manages volunteer schedules, oversees collections, and ensures rescued food is delivered promptly, safely, and to where it is most needed. The initiative is powered by dedicated local volunteers who collect and redistribute surplus food shortly after it becomes available. This rapid turnaround helps maintain freshness, removes the need for storage, and supports high standards of food safety and quality. Every item collected is carefully inspected to ensure it meets strict safety standards. Any food that cannot be shared is disposed of responsibly to minimise environmental impact. Coordination takes place through a dedicated WhatsApp group, providing volunteers with real-time updates on collection times, locations, and available quantities. By diverting significant amounts of food from landfill, the Food Rescue Group, Penrith is reducing methane emissions, conserving valuable resources, and strengthening community connections. Alongside environmental benefits, the initiative provides essential support to those who need it most. As the group continues to refine its approach, it is making meaningful progress towards a more sustainable and inclusive future.
