ALDI YORK - FULFORD RD

Door 84 has been a part of the community in the Groves, York for decades and we want to make sure it remains so. Originally named “York Boys Club” it was founded in the 1930s. In recent years under the name "Door 84" the charity has evolved into a trusted provider of high quality services in our community. Whilst we regularly receive referrals of people who need support from the local authority, our funding is entirely dependent on donations and fundraising activities, including grants from charitable foundations. Our work is never done and therefore our fundraising is never done either! We will be running a series of campaigns through Crowdfunder to enable us to continue funding these important services for the community in York. Through FOOD, FRIENDSHIP and ACTIVITIES we support all sectors of the community across the year and offer a welcoming space to build relationships, get support in accessing services and have the chance to relax in a friendly, safe space for those who need it. FOOD is provided free through our food bank, at low cost through the Community Cafe, and is always on offer at youth sessions. Food has the ability to bring people together and show people care and we see this every day in our building. FRIENDSHIPS are central to all our services and they develop through our youth clubs, between participants at our SPARKS sessions for adults with additional support needs, and amongst the community who attend the Community Cafe and Foodbank. ACTIVITIES occur in the various youth groups for young people ages 8-17 years, in our SPARKS sessions for adults with additional support needs, and are many and varied at our open to all Community Days which occur 2 or 3 times a year.

We collect would-be-waste food every day of the week and then use this food to cook a community meal the following day at Tang Hall Community Centre. Any uncooked surplus food is available on our sharing stall for customers to take away to cook at home or collected by Tang Hall Primary School, Haxby Road School and Peasholme homeless shelter for distribution. In this way 1,000kg of would-be-waste food will be eaten by human beings at each yourcafe event. The yourcafe ethos is pay-as-you-feel-able (PAYF) meaning that everyone is able contribute either time, money or skills. Everyone working for yourcafe is a volunteer and contributes to the cafe as they feel appropriate. Volunteering is a good way to improve self-esteem, developing self-confidence and social skills. We would like to recruit 10 new volunteers who are passionate about reducing food waste. Depending upon produce availability we create "soup" bags to take away which contain a simple recipe and the ingredients to cook a healthy soup. We also make chutneys and jams from any gluts and distribute them via the sharing stall. Any budding cooks are encouraged to help cook or take "jam" bags home to make their own. By providing simple recipes and wholesome produce we expect to increase confidence in the kitchen, stimulate an interest in new tastes and foster a desire to reduce food waste. I am reusable have our very own community food bank here in York. We have been going for over 2 plus years now and started up due to covid due to the demand. We feed over a 100 plus people a day 7 days a week. But also trying to combat food waste by reusing food in the community.
