Help for Heroes fundraising by Sally Wilson
Wokingham, UK
My fundraising story is a very personal one and one that has been so rewarding. In 2008, life looked very bleak having broken my back in an accident, but a chance meeting with two injured soldiers during my recovery, positively changed my life forever. These two soldiers had lost legs in Afghanistan and Help for Heroes had helped them in the initial stages of their prosthetics, and thus helped them to be more active. I was so struck by their story that I set a personal goal with a challenging set of objectives. So in 2010 my goal was to raise £40K in 5 years and achieve a challenge each year that tested both the mind and body. That goal has been smashed and 8 years on the total is £55K and rising. The challenges achieved in that time include: achieving the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, London 2012 Marathon, 2012 Reading Half Marathon, 8 day trek to Machu Picchu, 250km on a husky sledge, 120mile bike ride from Salisbury to London, 400 mile bike ride from Paris to Windsor. Over the next 2 years my mission is to travel 500 miles by walking, swimming, cycling and kayaking. The first of these challenges is 80 miles of the South West Coastline in Cornwall from St Ives to Padstow and later in the year a 120 mile bike ride. This year also, my 15 year old niece, Chiara has also helped with the fundraising total by organising a Silent Auction at Starbucks Wisley (a store that has helped raise £13K of that total by tin collections and Silent Auctions). Indeed, Starbucks in Berkshire and Surrey have been extremely supportive and I am grateful for that. The fundraising has humbled me and I have met some amazing people through the process. The challenges have really tested both mind and body but, more importantly, I have been inspired by those who have been injured during the course of fighting for their country and yet are the most positive individuals you could wish to meet. They are heroes and I am committed to help them rebuild their lives and continue the H4H cause that I believe in passionately. Thank you for your part in making this possible.
