Elly's Ward 10 Flag Appeal is raising funds to improve patient and visitor experience and environment on the Ward 10 Cancer Ward at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. Funds raised will be used for items and equipment to enhance the patients stay in hospital during what can be a very difficult time. We especially want to buy equipment that empowers patients' dignity while in hospital. Fund spending is driven by the Senior Ward Sisters who are best placed to know exactly what is needed and what will be a direct help. Your donation will not replace NHS funding but will be used support Ward 10 at Withybush Hospital to provide services and equipment above and beyond what the NHS in Wales can provide. We'll keep you in the loop with how fundraising is going and what Elly and her Flag have been doing to raise funds and awareness, We have also just purchased our first piece of new equipment for Ward 10 – a “Sara Steady” – enhanced standing aid with multiple uses for £1017. Elly’s Ward 10 Flag Appeal is a charitable fund operating under the umbrella of Hywel Dda Health Charities. A few people have asked us if Elly is, or has been, ill but we are happy to say thankfully not. It is Lyn, Elly's Dad, who had Cancer. Elly is a "Miracle" which came after the Cancer. Lyn had a type of blood cancer which meant he had to have a Bone Marrow Transplant in Kings College Hospital, two years after he was diagnosed. To cut a long story short, Lyn's transplant did not work properly and he spent many weeks in and out of Ward 10 and going back and forth to London for extra treatment. Lyn also spent a lot of time over a period of 3 to 4 years going to the Cancer Day Unit for blood and platelet transfusions. The Doctors and Nurses on the CDU and Ward 10 were always, and still are, excellent. Before the Bone Marrow Transplant Lyn and Ann had counselling and were informed that due to the intensity of the treatment there would be no more children. We felt lucky to have our son Rhys and accepted that would be it. The recovery is a long story and was slow but eventually things improved and Lyn returned to work with Pembrokeshire Cancer Support in 2008. Miracles can and do happen - in April 2010 Elly arrived, which was quite a shock for Elly's Mum who was now thought of as a geriatric Mum as she was over 40 and Elly's Dad.....should have been a Granddad at that age ! So Elly and her Ward 10 Flag is to raise Funds and Awareness for the new Ward 10, which will once again be a dedicated Cancer Ward. Refurbishment is much needed as nothing has changed since Lyn was there. The money raised through Ward 10 Flag will be for the patient environment or as Elly says, "for Plumpy Cushions and Fluffy Blankets."

Solving Kid's Cancer helps families affected by neuroblastoma through the provision of support and information; as well as investing in research and advocating for access to better treatment. 7-year-old Morgan has been fighting high-risk neuroblastoma since he was 4 years old. When he finished the gruelling frontline treatment regime in February 2017, his end-of-treatment scans showed no evidence of disease. But just 5 weeks later, he began complaining of pain in his arm, legs and side, which got progressively worse. He then experienced sudden paralysis which led to an emergency MRI scan in June 2017. The MRI scan confirmed that Morgan had relapsed, with multiple tumours on his spinal cord and another tumour close to his brain stem. “We were told that because Morgan’s relapse was in the central nervous system it was life threatening with the worst prognosis imaginable,” say Ben and Sophie, Morgan’s parents. Morgan received emergency Craniospinal Radiation to relieve his pain and another three cycles of chemotherapy. While he’s shown a good response to the emergency radiotherapy and chemotherapy, he still has disease in the brain stem. Having exhausted treatment options available through the NHS, his family and treating team have identified a clinical trial overseas that could help clear his remaining disease. The treatment is called radioimmunotherapy (8H9) and is available at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Desperate for Morgan to live life free from neuroblastoma, his family are appealing for your help to raise the £191,000 needed to access the clinical trial, cover the associated costs (e.g. travel and accommodation) and to ensure a contingency fund for any unforeseen complications whilst overseas. His parents are hopeful that the treatment will get Morgan back into remission, following which; he can access further treatment to try to help maintain his remission. This additional treatment would also not be available through the NHS. Thank you so much for your support.
