Do you believe that young disabled people should have the same opportunities as their peers? We are at the start of a new journey working closely with organisations predominantly within Haringey and we want YOU to be part of it! We want a community that is fully inclusive and accessible for the disabled people that work, live, socialise, shop and travel around it. We want to reach out to many organisations within the community that our students, trainees and others with disabilities would like to access or benefit from without fear of communication issues, feeling unsafe and with a real feeling of inclusion. Areas of focus will include; o Gaining voluntary opportunities for our students and trainees o Gaining paid work placements for our trainees o Putting leant skills into practice in real life situations for our students and trainees o Accessibility within the community o Raising awareness and promoting our cause o Creating opportunities to fundraise and build new relationships o Socialising for our students, trainees and others with disabilities Whether it is being understood, included in the local community, getting a paid job, volunteering, shopping, eating out or joining a sports club, my AFK believes in true inclusion. We want to change the shocking fact that only 6% of adults in the UK with a learning disability have a job as compared with 73% without a learning disability. Our aim is to raise aspirations, improve skills and ultimately move young people into work. Our results speak for themselves - 77% of the cohort we have worked with in the past two years have sustained paid employment. To help us reach further into our community, my AFK is currently working with their youth council and trainees to become charity ambassadors and work closely with organisations to build more inclusive workplaces, accessible environments and raise awareness. We also want to recognise the support and achievements of our new partners. my AFK and our trainees will present On the Up Community Cup awards celebrating inclusivity, to those organisations who take part in the project. We provide specialist mobility equipment not available on the NHS to disabled children and young people up to their 25th birthday, across the UK. We work with schools and colleges to introduce disabled students aged 14+ to the world of work and prepare them for the transition to life after school and we help disabled young people aged 19+ to develop important life and work skills so they can live more independently and move into paid employment.
