The Stairway to Heaven Memorial honours those who died, survived or helped with the rescue in the worst civilian disaster of World War 2. It stands proudly in Bethnal Green Gardens (next to Bethnal Green tube station entrance). We now need volunteers to check that the wreaths are not moved and remain spaced out along the plinth regularly. We also need volunteers to water the Memorial Garden in hot, dry weather from time to time.

Re:Assure Women’s Project is London’s only service that is targeted to, and tailored for, HIV positive women who are in crisis and have experienced, or are living in, environments of domestic violence, are survivors of abuse and severe trauma, e.g. rape and forced marriage and those who are refugees or asylum seekers. All of whom are considered at higher risk of poor mental health, low medical adherence, lower rates of accessing services, severe isolation and are at increased susceptibility to future and continued abuse. Prior to the launch of Re:Assure, there were limited programmes in London that targeted the mental health and wellbeing of HIV positive women, particularly those who have experienced past trauma. To fill this gap, the project was developed in collaboration with potential participants. Activities include: one-to-one psychological therapy, peer support, group support, skill building training, assistance at immigration tribunals and volunteering opportunities. This allows us to provide earlier interventions to overcome past traumas before they become deep-rooted and unmanageable. Through these activities, Re:Assure is able to build women’s independence, self-esteem and confidence to live well with HIV free from violence and abuse. The project provides opportunities to: develop the tools required to overcome past trauma and abuse and addresses fear, stigma and shame; increase understanding of HIV and the practicalities of sexual relationships and their rights under law; increase knowledge regarding domestic violence, the different forms it can take and how it can make someone feel; develop feeling of empowerment to leave abusive relationships and confidence to manage future relationships and provides transferable skill building opportunities. Re:Assure is managed by a Clinical Psychologist and supported by a Peer Support volunteers. The project has a strong track record of improving the lives of women through a targeted and holistic approach. Past participants consistently report a significant change and increase in confidence, self-esteem, mental health and physical well-being.
